When Walter got a job with Bellhops, a furniture moving company, he saw an opportunity to show how dedicated he was to his job. When his car broke down, rather than calling in sick or saying he wouldn’t be able to, Walter got dressed eight hours before his shift and started walking. He walked over 20 miles to make it on time for his first day of work.

Walter arrives in Pelham, the town where he was supposed to meet at a house to start his first day on the job, before a policeman stops him by the side of the road and asks him what he is doing by the side of the road. the freeway at such a late hour.

Carr wants to teach young people to never give up and that they are only defeated if they allow themselves to feel that way. “It’s going to be a tough world,” Carr added. “It’s like a piece of gum: it chews us and spits us out after five seconds, so you always have to be ready and be on your guard. Never give up.”

In May 2019, Carr presented the inaugural Walter Carr Prize, an award presented by the Birmingham Education Foundation to schools in the city of Birmingham, at senior Darion Hall, which included a scholarship of $ 2,500.

Foundation CEO J. Carpenter describes Carr as “the gift that keeps on giving”.
