In 1980, a Dagara shaman came to the United States for graduate study. During this time one of his fellow students was sent to a mental institution for “nervous depression.”

Dr. Malidome Patrice Some went to visit his friend and was appalled at the treatment of mentally ill people in the West. In his culture, what we call the mental illness is energy from the other side attempting to manifest itself in our world and thereby creating a healer.

The treatment that was observed in a psychiatric ward left the good doctor shaken. In his society those whom we call mentally ill are treated differently, with kindness, compassion and Shamanic rituals are preformed to allow the energy which is believed to be spiritual entities to enter our world and deliver their message or perform healing acts.

What he saw was that people drugged and treated in a way that prevented this merging of the other side energies and the beings attempting these mergings being thwarted, which resulted in anguish for the patient, as the spiritual being persisted in attempting to merge with that individual who has been chosen. Such a waste of a healer was Dr. Some’s conclusion.

  • Testing a Theory

To test this theory an 18 year old boy who had been in a mental hospital for “Severe Depression” was taken to Dr. Some’s village in Africa, where rituals were created and performed to bring the energies of both worlds into harmony.

The experiment was a success and the boy stayed in the village for 4 years learning the healing arts and later went back to the US to study and do post-graduate work and become a practicing Psychologist graduating from Harvard University. Something no one, least of all the boy and his parents ever expected.

This proved in Doctor Some’s mind that the Dagara’s theory of entities and energy from the other side coming across was a universal constant in our world in both Africa and America; the next question was how to change things for the better in this country.

  • We in the West are disconnected from the Universe and our Ancestors.

In the West was the Conclusion that the Dagara Doctor came to is that we have lost our connection to the spirit realm and our machine culture blots out our sensitivity, and the ability to feel the spirits of Rivers, Mountains and especially those of our Ancestors.

Mountain and River spirits hear our often-unconscious desires to become something more and answer that cry by attempting to bring about that change for which they hear. Which if a proper balance and alignment of energies is not maintained we may wind up in a mental hospital. Dr. Some was able balance these energies by creating rituals appropriate for our Western minds to follow.
By going to a mountain or river and communicating with the spirit through ritual and bringing, back a token from either the river or mountain in the form of an object such as a stone.

Many people have been granted almost immediate relief of a variety of problems aliments, carry these tokens about with them afterward, and report new and profound abilities that they did not have before, which the Shaman attributes to the fact that a healer has been born into our Western society.

Ancestral Entities and energies are more difficult to deal with as often they are attempting to complete tasks, missions or callings that they left uncompleted at their death. They now wish to merge with their descendants and finish their calling through them. Again Westernized rituals help reconcile these merged entities into a harmonious whole. The danger here is the fact that not all of these entities are benign in which case the ritual negates the merger and banishes the negative entity back from which it came.

  • Creation and the Restoration of Ritual in western Society

One of the great problems in Western society is that Adolescents have no initiation rites for entering adulthood as is in the case of many non-Western societies, Dr. Some works with communities in attempting to create some form of initiation that can help young people cope with the transformation into an adult. Many of the problems of our modern culture could be alleviated by bringing back ritual and reconnecting with our spiritual side.

The Shamanic approach and rituals could hold the answer to curb the growing violence we are seeing among our young as reported more and more in the media of late. Rituals and an acknowledgment of importance of ritual and of other worlds on different planes may be the new treatment paradigm that will be taught in the medical schools of the future.
