When Jake Gladstone was born, he looked like any normal baby. At his sixth month, it was discovered that he was having a rare condition of almost half his brain missing. The doctors notified his parents that they should expect him not to talk or walk as a normal child.
Instead of all expectations Jake, and before reaching his first birthday, could pull himself up and make his first shambles around the house. Neither his doctors nor other people who knew about his condition believed it could ever be possible. A year later, he took his first tentative steps and uttered his first words.
“It is just unbelievable. When we look at Jake’s X-rays we can see the big space where half of his brain has died off. ….But he’s full of energy and runs around just like other children his age. He’s defied all the doctors’ predictions. He is behind in his speech, but other than that he can walk and run too. He’s our little miracle.” said Jake’s mum, Sarah 35 years old.
In September 2009, Jake was born weighing 3.06 Kg, at the Hull and East Yorkshire Women and Children’s Hospital. One week after he was born, Jake was taken back to Hospital as he had a health problem but doctors sent him back home thinking it was only a virus.
Six months later, his mother noticed that he was not using his right hand and his arm was permanently held in one position. She had other concerns as Jake “hadn’t been an easy baby since he’d first gone back to hospital at a week old. He was constantly crying and had been difficult to settle for months…. “Then I noticed he wasn’t using his arm properly so I took him to see our GP.” Sarah added.
When announced to his parents, the doctors’ diagnosis fell on their heads like a bombshell. It was specified that he had Cystic Encephalomalacia. In medicine, this is also called cerebral softening which means that Jake’s brain had been killed off before he was born.
Sarah’s reaction after receiving the news: “I was so shocked when they told me what the matter with him was. Only half of his brain was working, the other half was completely dead.
“I couldn’t understand how he could only have half a brain and yet he was living a normal life.”
Despite the difficulties, Jake surprised his parents and the entire world with his magical progress throughout treasure moments although having frenzies from time to time.
Dr. Gail Herman, Pediatrician from The Children’s Trust, specialist in youths with brain injuries said: “This is usually a devastating disease…. “This little boy has done remarkably well which is due to one side of his brain being healthy. It has retrained itself to compensate for the side which doesn’t work, allowing him to do the things he does.”
Paul, the police inspector who works full time in Hull hospital and one of those who were inspired by Jake’s case said: “We are so proud of Jake. Watching him grow and develop each day just seems like a miracle to us. He’s doing so many things that we never thought he would do… “He surprises us each day with how well he is doing.”
