Amidst the ongoing drug shortage crisis jeopardizing the lives of patients battling diabetes, cancer, and severe infections, Jeff Bolle, a respected high school counselor and football coach from Milwaukee, tragically became its latest victim. At the age of 60, Bolle lost his battle with bile duct cancer in December, as his medical team faced the daunting challenge of depleted supplies of cisplatin, a crucial chemotherapy drug essential for his treatment. Bolle had undergone surgery and endured four rounds of chemotherapy in an attempt to eradicate a grapefruit-sized tumor located in his bile duct adjacent to the liver.
Despite doctors’ recommendations for two additional rounds of chemotherapy to eradicate any remaining cancer cells, Mr. Bolle faced a devastating setback when he learned that the cancer center where he received treatment lacked the necessary drug. Consequently, he endured months of suffering without access to vital cancer-slowing medication.
Jeff Bolle, seen on the left alongside his wife Connie, passed away six months after being informed by doctors of the unavailability of his cancer-slowing drug, cisplatin, due to an ongoing shortage. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his illness that same year without receiving the two remaining chemotherapy treatments he needed.
His narrative emerges amidst the struggle of thousands of patients across the US grappling with the scarcity of medication, extending beyond chemotherapy drugs to encompass diabetes medications, antibiotics, and anesthetics.
Before his passing, Mr. Bolle and his wife Connie bravely shared their ordeal publicly, aiming to draw attention to the issue and apply pressure on federal authorities to address it promptly.
A recent survey conducted among the nation’s 29 largest cancer centers revealed alarming statistics: 72 percent reported an insufficient supply of the chemotherapy drug carboplatin, while 59 percent still faced shortages of cisplatin. Both medications are extensively utilized in the treatment of various cancers.
This shortfall has resulted in hundreds of thousands of patients being deprived of the essential treatments they require.
Mr. Bolle’s battle with cancer commenced in October 2022, prompted by unusual back pain initially attributed to rigorous weightlifting. Despite attempts to alleviate the discomfort with hot and cold compresses and reducing exercise intensity, the pain persisted.
Reflecting on his experience, Mr. Bolle shared with Today last year: “I found myself relying on Tylenol at night just to find some semblance of comfort for sleep. It became clear I needed to seek medical attention to determine the cause.”
Blood tests conducted by his primary care physicians revealed elevated liver enzymes, leading to further investigation with an MRI. The scan unveiled a grapefruit-sized tumor situated between his liver and kidney, resulting in a diagnosis of bile duct cancer—a condition claiming approximately 83 percent of its victims.
Recalling the prognosis, Mr. Bolle stated: “My doctor conveyed that this type of cancerous growth rarely enters remission. Their approach was to surgically remove the majority of the tumor and utilize chemotherapy to impede its progression.”
Mr. Bolle continued coaching the high school football team until he could no longer physically navigate the sidelines without assistance, relying on his walker. His team fondly remembers him as a devoted coach who exemplified kindness and compassion.
Initially, everything seemed manageable, until the devastating news arrived that doctors were unable to access his life-sustaining medication.
After platinum is extracted, it undergoes conversion into cisplatin at Intas Pharmaceuticals in India before being finalized and distributed at FDA-approved facilities in Europe and the US. It is during these stages of production that the bottlenecks leading to shortages have emerged.
Intas Pharmaceuticals has encountered regulatory issues with the FDA over time, culminating in the closure of one of its extensive plants following an unexpected inspection last year, which uncovered deficiencies in quality control. Furthermore, employees were discovered attempting to conceal vital documents by dousing them in acid. The resulting manufacturing halt triggered a significant disruption in supply chains in February.
In response, the FDA has initiated temporary measures such as establishing import channels with China to procure essential drugs.
Similar challenges in the supply chain, compounded by natural disasters, have also impacted the availability of other medications. Presently, there are 323 drugs in short supply nationwide, marking the highest figure since records began in 2001.
In a survey conducted by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, over 1,000 pharmacists participated, with an overwhelming 99 percent reporting challenges in maintaining adequate stock levels of the necessary drugs.

Roughly one out of every three US hospitals has admitted to either postponing, delaying, or reducing medication doses for patients due to supply shortages. Meanwhile, nearly all pharmacists, up to 99 percent, have directly felt the strain.
Experts have long cautioned about vulnerabilities within the pharmaceutical supply chain. These concerns include shortages of critical ingredients obtained from overseas, flaws in the shipping process, and regulatory or quality concerns at drug manufacturing facilities.
Natural disasters can also disrupt the supply of drugs reaching hospitals and pharmacies. For instance, a tornado wreaked havoc on a Pfizer pharmaceutical plant in North Carolina last summer, tearing through the warehouse storing raw materials for medications like morphine and anesthetics.
Connie Bolle, Jeff’s wife, cannot definitively say whether Jeff would be alive today had he received access to the two remaining chemotherapy treatments that could potentially have halted the spread of cancer cells after his tumor was surgically removed.
Nevertheless, she finds solace in the knowledge that he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the students on his football team, which ultimately clinched the division one state championship title. Mr. Bolle attended every game, continued coaching the defensive backs for as long as his strength allowed, closely observing the plays from the field with his walker.
Reflecting on his determination, Mrs. Bolle remarked, “I don’t know how Jeff managed it because, honestly, he could barely stand. By then, he was probably down to about 140 pounds.”
By December 14, Mr. Bolle had entered hospice care at home. On the 28th, he agreed to remain in his hospital bed on the first floor of their home, as ascending the stairs had become too challenging.
Describing this as “a sign of defeat,” Mrs. Bolle noted that he passed away just one day later.
His team honored him as a devoted coach who led with kindness, courage, and compassion until the very end.
Mrs. Bolle emphasized, “He genuinely cared about others not receiving these chemotherapy drugs. He would still be saddened today knowing that people are still grappling with this issue.”
