Talk about culture shock.

An Italian exchange student has become an unlikely social media star after his American host mom surprised him with a trip to Olive Garden — a carb-filled outing that nearly had the unsuspecting teen shouting basta before he even made it inside.

In a series of now-viral clips, viewers watch as Alessandro’s enthusiastic host mom, Rhonda, reveals the surprise visit to the famously divisive Italian-American chain as if she’s taking him somewhere special.

“Today’s your lucky day!” Rhonda says cheerfully while trying to coax the clearly hesitant student out of the car.

But Alessandro isn’t convinced. Realizing where they’re headed, he jokingly begs for a detour to McDonald’s instead, insisting a visit to the Golden Arches would be less offensive to Italy’s culinary traditions.

“Rhonda, why?” he asks in mock despair, though his initial resistance eventually gives way to reluctant acceptance.

“Mamma mia,” he says as the reality sinks in. “I have to be mentally prepared for this. This is something against my will. Just so you know.”

The soup-and-salad saga played out on TikTok, where both Alessandro and Rhonda shared clips from their Olive Garden outing, offering their own perspectives on the experience. The videos quickly racked up tens of millions of views.

Online, viewers delighted in the lighthearted culture clash, watching as authentic Italian sensibilities collided with one of America’s most famous destinations for endless breadsticks.

Call it pasta diplomacy: one Italian teen, one trip to Olive Garden and plenty of mamma mia moments.

Commenters were quick to weigh in on the lighthearted international incident once the clips started circulating online.

“Italian here… I would settle for a gas station hot dog before Olive Garden,” one viewer joked.

Another commenter suggested Alessandro might already be “regretting this whole exchange thing,” while someone else summed up the situation as “an Italian’s biggest nightmare.”

Many viewers, however, simply enjoyed the teen’s play-by-play commentary as the culinary adventure unfolded.

Alessandro’s exuberant host mom, Rhonda, eventually persuaded him to head inside for the restaurant’s famous unlimited breadsticks.

Viewers couldn’t get enough of the exchange.

“LMAO he is so funny,” one commenter wrote, while another highlighted Alessandro’s desperate suggestion: “The ‘No, let’s go to McDonald’s!’ took me out.”

One fellow paesan chimed in, “I feel that ‘no’ deep in my Italian soul,” while another European viewer added, “I can relate to this on so many levels.”

As the meal went on, however, Alessandro slowly began to warm up to the experience. At one point, he can be seen dipping breadsticks into Alfredo sauce.

To many viewers’ surprise, he admitted the combination was actually “good” — though he quickly joked that enjoying it felt like he was “betraying” his homeland.

He even confessed to liking the fried mozzarella and calamari, eventually apologizing to his American host parents for doubting their beloved chain restaurant.

The viral moment is just the latest example of a popular social media trend in which Europeans react — sometimes with horror, sometimes with amusement — to American interpretations of their traditional cuisines.

And according to a recent poll of tourism experts, Americans don’t always win popularity contests abroad — particularly with Italians.
