The story of Punch, the baby macaque, has touched hearts worldwide.

Affectionately known as Punch-kun, he was born in July 2025 but was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth. Caretakers at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan stepped in to rescue him, hand-raising him while closely monitoring his growth and gradually introducing him to other macaques.

Despite their efforts, when Punch was moved into an enclosure with other monkeys, he struggled to integrate into the group.

Caretakers at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan stepped in to rescue and hand-raise Punch, carefully monitoring his growth and gradually introducing him to other macaques.

Monkeys typically cling to their mothers from birth, so to ease his anxiety and loneliness, caretakers gave Punch an oversized stuffed orangutan. He quickly formed a strong bond with the toy, carrying it everywhere he goes.

Local reports say he treats the stuffed animal like the mother he never had—sleeping, eating, and playing with it as if it were real.

The six-month-old’s attachment has not only surprised zoo staff but also captured hearts across Japan and around the world. Images of Punch with his stuffed companion have gone viral online, enchanting viewers everywhere.

The zoo has seen huge crowds of visitors, with locals and tourists alike lining up to see Punch, offer their well-wishes, and cheer him on.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who visited us today,” the zoo said in a statement on February 15.

“All of our staff were surprised by the unexpected turnout, something we have never experienced before,” the zoo said.

“We apologize for the delays in getting visitors through the gates and will continue preparations for next week’s three-day weekend to ensure everyone can enjoy their visit comfortably.”

Many visitors have shared their experiences on social media, posting photos and videos of Punch and his beloved toy.

Huge crowds have gathered at the zoo as locals and tourists flock to catch a glimpse of Punch, sharing well-wishes and cheering him on.

One visitor wrote on X, “I went to see Punch. He showed off his cute little toy, running and lying around.”

Another added, “I went to see Punch-kun, but the other animals were also so close and adorable—it was a lot of fun. I’m sure the staff were really tired from the crowds. I’m rooting for you.”

A third shared, “We visited the zoo today! There wasn’t much of a line when we arrived, but the line was huge when we left. People were there to see Punch! Even in the morning, the monkey enclosure was packed. The kids seemed to love the park area! We hope to visit again soon.”

One visitor described the scene as both “cute” and “very sad.”

“It’s adorable to see the little monkey carrying his stuffed animal everywhere, but it’s also very sad at the same time,” they said.

Others have voiced concerns about Punch-kun’s well-being, hoping he continues to receive the care and attention he needs.

Another commented on the zoo’s X statement: “I really hope Punch finds his place. Zoos do vital work for animal welfare, and seeing the staff support Punch through his struggles shows their deep commitment. It’s a heartwarming effort.”

Some visitors also expressed concern for the other animals. “It’s a wonderful zoo, with a laid-back atmosphere and a close connection to the animals. I’m worried that the sudden surge in activity might tire out the other animals, even if it’s only temporary. Please put the animals first—though I’m sure the staff are most concerned about this,” one person wrote.

In a separate update, the zoo shared that Punch is “gradually deepening his interactions with the other monkeys in his group.”

“He has a variety of experiences every day, such as being groomed, playing with them, and even being scolded. He is learning each day how to live in a group as a monkey,” the zoo added.
