We are thinking all of the time, even though we rarely talk about thinking itself, we sure do talk about our thoughts. Our thoughts help produce our actions, feelings, stress-levels, health, self-image, etc. Whether we live lives of fear, abundance, excitement, or scarcity, it is our way of thinking that leads to our way of life. Life can get a heck of a lot better once we realize the roles our thoughts play in our daily lives. Here are five truths about thoughts that are worth a thought or two (no pun intended)!
1.We Have Thoughts Nearly All the Time
Children are great observers and are often occupied by what they see or hear. Of course, children can think and ruminate, however, have you ever seen a 2-year-old lost in thought as an adult would be? It would be odd to see that glazed and absent look in a tiny child.
As we grow into adulthood, our thoughts become more of who we are. We are constantly interpreting, predicting, or judging while we pay attention to our surroundings. From childhood to adulthood, our “internal maps” flourish until they become more important than observing the present moment. Our thoughts are the main focus and the present moment is put on the back burner.
2. Most Thoughts Accomplish Very Little
Most of our thoughts create dust, rather than clarity. Free-association and unconscious thoughts take up most of our brains. It’s as if we follow random strangers to any destination when we lose ourselves in our thoughts, rather than following our thoughts for a purpose. If what you are thinking right now has no real purpose, it’s time to make that observation a habit. Without a habit to break the train of pointless thoughts, they’ll keep going and going.
3. Thinking is Addictive
Just like a salesman who will continuously sell you stuff until you stop buying, your brain will continuously generate new information and rehash old information you no longer care about (like who played that character on that 80’s sitcom). The mind enjoys placing, figuring, matching, and creating, and will stop at nothing until you put your foot down. Yes, the mind is an extraordinary tool and it’s awesome it can do these things, but when you’re attention needs to be placed in the present moment, thinking becomes a cyclone of useless information.
4. Our Thoughts Differ From Their Subject Matter
All thoughts and our reactions to them happen in the present. The emotional mind can bring in thoughts such as old relationships, bad breakups, fear of never finding love, etc. and once the emotional mind takes hold of the brain, can better correspond with those thoughts, rather than what is happening around us. In other words, when you are thinking about something that upsets you, you are experiencing a reaction to the thought and not the actual subject matter. The thoughts of the subject matters produce our reactions. Being unable to sleep while thinking about the violence in the world is caused by how you are interpreting everything, not the actual violent world. If it were the actual violent world that is causing insomnia, why haven’t you been experiencing the insomnia every night?
5. Our Thoughts Can Be Taught
If we can get in the habit of re-training our minds to act in the present, instead of trailing away to No Man’s Land with our thoughts leading the way, we can get in the habit of reclaiming our attention. It’s hard to remember to manually put our attention to the present world, but it is definitely worth it.
