Wim Huf is a man famous for his amazing feats in the harshest of weather conditions. This Dutch man earned the nickname of “The Iceman” because of his ability to resist extreme cold temperatures. Wim has perfected a method of breathing that allows him to go deep within his own body and consciously control his tolerance levels and his immune responses.

A group of scientists from the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen in the Netherlands studied Huf’s methods to better understand why The Iceman can do what he does. Then, led by Matthijs Kox, the scientists recruited 12 people to see if they could train them to fight off inflammation.

The study actually consisted of 24 participants; 12 were taught the Wim Huf method, and 12 received no training. The people volunteered to subjected themselves to an injection filled with bacteria that would possibly make them suffer from flu-like symptoms.

The 12 volunteers who received Wim Huf training reported fewer, and less intense, flu-like symptoms. Amazingly, this same group produced smaller amounts of the proteins that relate to inflammation, and higher levels of an inflammation fighting protein called interkeukin-10.

The scientific journal, PNAS, wrote in an article that before this trial no one thought that the autonomic nervous system and the innate immune system could be voluntarily controlled. This study demonstrates that people learning this simple, short-term training program were able to control their immune system and their sympathetic nervous system. The study was a success.

Guiseppe Mantarese, an immunologist from the University of Salerno in Italy (who had no involvement in this study) said that “orthodox neurobiologists and orthodox immunologists have been skeptical.” He further says that these scientists think that this study between the immune and nervous systems is nothing by a “field in the shadows.” Guiseppe seems quite convinced: “This study is a nice way to show that link.”

The Wim Huf study is not the only one to prove that mind control can work with our own immune systems. A group of Australian scientists conducted their own study on the ability of people to consciously influence the intensity of their reactions to allergens.

One group of volunteers had their arms injected with histamine. Histamine plays a large role in allergic reactions. The test was set so that each person actually thought a rubber doll placed by their side was getting an injection of Histamine. However, the real injection was actually being made in their other arm.

The control group were given an injection of Histamine, but there was no doll present and they knew they got the shot.

After this experiment the volunteers compared their allergic reactions on both arms. Those who thought the doll received the injection reported fewer allergic symptoms in the arm that did not get a shot.

Professor Lorimer Moseley, the leader of the study said, “Such a finding is particularly relevant to the immune system because the primary role of the immune system is to discriminate self from non-self.” He further states that the brain does exert control over our bodies, depending on “how strongly we own them.”

Both of these studies do show that we can use our conscious thoughts, moods, and beliefs to influence our immune system. Learning to control your immune system will help you improve your immune system, and thus, your overall health. Look for the good in life, see yourself as the happy and healthy person you want to be.
