Early box office projections for Supergirl have raised concerns following controversy surrounding lead actress Milly Alcock, whose comments drew criticism from some Christian fathers.

According to Box Office Theory, the upcoming DC superhero film, scheduled for release on June 26, is projected to earn between $47 million and $65 million during its opening weekend. Its total domestic box office haul is currently forecast to land between $107 million and $181 million.

The film, produced under James Gunn’s DC Studios leadership, reportedly carries a production budget of approximately $170 million. Marketing costs are estimated to surpass $75 million, bringing the project’s total estimated investment to roughly $245 million.

According to Box Office Theory, Supergirl, which arrives in theaters on June 26, is projected to earn between $47 million and $65 million during its opening weekend and finish with a domestic total of $107 million to $181 million (Alcock is pictured above).

Based on its reported production and marketing costs, the film would likely need to generate roughly $425 million worldwide to break even. That figure is well above Box Office Theory’s current global forecast of approximately $350 million.

For comparison, James Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet, debuted to $125 million domestically in July 2025 and ultimately grossed $618 million worldwide. The film reportedly carried a combined production and marketing budget of about $325 million.

Supergirl is also set to face significant competition at the box office. Disney’s Toy Story 5 opens a week earlier, on June 19, and is currently projected to earn between $130 million and $160 million domestically in its opening weekend, with a total domestic run estimated at $465 million to $600 million.
