Humanitas, a retirement home near Amsterdam, has come up with a genius idea to help with the expenses of students and take care at the same time of their elderly residents who must stay physically and mentally healthy.
Six of students with the age between 18 to 22 years old, have moved to the retirement home where 16 residents live, to spend at least 30 hours taking care of the senior residents in return for their free lodging at a retirement home in the Dutch town of Deventer. The students are serving the elderly students, they are doing anything from serving meals, hosting classes and workshops, running or helping with errands, and spending quality time with everyone.
This initiative led by Humanitas has inspired many other social organizations elsewhere in Europe to explore similar opportunities as well!

“It’s important not to isolate the elderly from the outside world,” said Gea Sijpkes, Humanitas Deventer CEO
“When you’re 96 years old with a knee problem, well, the knee isn’t going to get any better…”
“But what we can do is create an environment where you forget about the painful knee”
