Jean Daniel Pession, a prominent skier, and his girlfriend, Elisa Arlian, met a tragic end when they fell over 2,000ft from Mount Zerbion in Italy. The couple, both in their twenties, were reportedly hiking on the popular Alpine mountain in the Aosta Valley. Following their failure to return home, a rescue mission was dispatched to locate Pession and Arlian.
Upon notification by their families, authorities swiftly mobilized firefighters and helicopters to the location. Tragically, hours later, their bodies were discovered buried under snow, believed to have fallen approximately 2,300ft from near the summit. Reports from Italy indicate that the search team pinpointed the couple’s location using signals from one of their cell phones. As rescuers descended towards the snow, they encountered the couple still tethered together.

The Italian skier Pession, just 28 at the time of his passing, had previously achieved a 15th place finish in the World Cup. The Italian Winter Sports Federation confirmed this devastating news over the weekend.
“In a statement, they expressed, ‘A profound tragedy has struck the world of winter sports, particularly speed skiing. Jean Daniel Pession, a 28-year-old member of the World Cup team, lost his life in a tragic mountain accident above Champoluc. His girlfriend also perished alongside him.’
Throughout his career, the Aosta Valley native showcased his talent, notably achieving his best results in 2021, securing fifteenth place in the final World Cup ranking. Additionally, at the 2022 World Championships in Vars, he finished 22nd.”

It is suspected that the couple were hiking on Mount Zerbion, a well-liked Alpine destination.

The Italian Winter Sports Federation remarked, “A grievous tragedy befalls the world of winter sports.”
