A young Iranian man called Balaal was pardoned at the last minute by the mother of his victim as a result of a campaign to save his life. Balaal had been convicted of murdering the women’s son, Abdollah Hosseinzadeh, in a fight about 7 years ago. Blindfolded, awaiting what seemed like certain death, the convict and the world were shocked when instead of starting the hanging the mother of the murdered man slapped Balaal, and announced that they would accept the blood money. Her and her husband, a former footballer, than removed the noose from around Balaal’s neck in front of the onlooking crowd.
Photograph’s showing Balaal gritting his teeth awaiting death were widely circulated as were newspaper stories of him being led to the execution site in a black hood. Samereh Alinejad, the mother of the man who was murdered, said about her decision to spare Balaal that the, “slap was the space between revenge and forgiveness. Now that I’ve forgiven him I feel relieved.” Samereh Alinejad went on to explain how her decision to spare the killer came about from a dream. In the dream her son appeared to her and told her he was at peace and in a better place. After the dream the rest of the families desire for revenge also abated, and even the murdered boy’s grandmother asked that the killer be pardoned.
In Iranian law, which is based on Sharia Law, the family of those who have been murdered may remove the chair holding a murderer up to begin a hanging, which is known as, “qisas.” The family also has the option of accepting blood money in lieu of an execution for retribution. It is very rare for a family to wait until the moment of execution to decide to accept the blood money and pardon a convict. Perhaps part of the reason it took Alinejad’s so long to make her decision is because she’d previously lost a son in a motorcycle accident.
Several celebrities, including noted film maker Mostafo Kiaei and former international footballer Ali Daei, launched the efforts to save Balaal’s life. The blood money largely came from ticket sales to the screening of Mostafo Kiaei’s new film, “Special Line.” The family of Abdollah was asked to spare the life of Balaal by many people, and their decision was likely partially a result of these efforts. Several days after the screening money was still being donated to the fund to spare Balaal’s life. Kiaei explained that because Iran does not have NGOs efforts like his have to be organized on a case by case basis by people like him who have the tools to reach a large audience. The victim’s father intends to erect a football stadium in his son’s honor with the blood money.
Perhaps taking inspiration from the efforts that saved Balaal’s life a group of Iranian artists has launched an effort to keep a women, Reyhaneh Jabbari, who is 26, from being executed. For killing a former intelligence officer she has been sentenced to death. The group of artists and other are worried her execution is imminent but her lawyer says no date has been set yet.
