According to criminal defense lawyer, the advances in neuroscience have been happening at a fast pace. Recently, a group of researchers identified a specific brain wave as P300. They agree that P300 is a marker that encodes everything we see as we go about our daily lives.
Using this knowledge, the researchers conducted a Concealed Information Test (CIT) to see if their findings were correct. Lead researcher John B Meixner and J. Peter Rosenfeld, the co-author of the study, put small cameras on 24 college students. These cameras, which recorded both sound and video, were worn by each student for 4 hours before they turned the cameras off and returned them.
Using the audio and video from the cameras, the researchers chose one “probe” item for half the participants. These probe items were things they actual saw or heard. Next, the researchers decided on a corresponding “irrelevant” item that the student did not encounter that day. For example, if the participant went out to dinner at a fast food place, the irrelevant items would be other fast food places he or she did not go to.
The other 12 participant’s videos were basically not needed for this study. The researchers wanted this experiment to simulate an actual investigation where someone with real knowledge of the crime (check lawyers for expungement claims) would be shown the same details as someone who has absolutely no knowledge of said crime. This half of the group was to be shown the same probes and irrelevant items as the first group. The next day the students went back to the lab and were hooked up to brain scanners. Then they were shown the different probes and irrelevant items. Students who actually encountered the probe items showed larger P300 brain waves than did those with no previous encounter of the probe. In fact, every student shown their probe item had a large P300 brain wave. The control group showed no such changes. Safety must be ensured while taking these observations or it will end up with chaos.
