Robert Carradine, best known for his iconic roles in Revenge of the Nerds and Lizzie McGuire, passed away on Sunday at the age of 71.
According to his brother, actor Keith Carradine, Robert took his own life after struggling with bipolar disorder, as reported by Deadline.
A member of the legendary Carradine acting family, Robert was the son of John Carradine and brother to Keith and David Carradine.
In a statement to Deadline, his family shared: “It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away.”

A member of the legendary Carradine acting family, Robert appeared alongside Michelle Meyrink in the 1984 comedy Revenge of the Nerds. He made his film debut in the John Wayne Western The Cowboys (1972) and also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s crime classic Mean Streets (1973).
Following his passing, Robert’s family shared a heartfelt statement:
“In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him. We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder. We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness. At this time, we ask for privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss. His brother, actor Keith Carradine, spoke openly about Robert’s struggle with bipolar disorder, revealing that Robert had been diagnosed after their brother David’s death in 2009. Keith emphasized the importance of raising awareness about mental health:
“We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it. It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle and celebrate his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day. We will take solace in how funny he could be, how wise and utterly accepting and tolerant he was. That’s who my baby brother was.”
