There are two things that we can rely on: death and taxes. There are profound changes in the banking industry, politics, social institutes and other hierarchies, causing many to ponder our old ways. In the natural world, different cycles play themselves out in a constant movement between birth and death. The circle of life is forever spinning, as death gives way to life and life to death. For instance, the tree is a great example of the circle of life. Annually, the tree sheds its leaves, and they fall to the ground to nourish the earth as they decompose, enriching the soil and permitting new plants to grow. The whale, as well, births and grows to produce its own calves. Eventually, the whale will die, and float to the bottom of the ocean to feed countless other species, who in turn feed thousands of others in this cycle.
Everything plays a part in the theatre of life. Intermingling and co-existing amongst other species, the trees, plants, animals and birds accept their part of the whole. It seems that mankind is the only anmal left dwelling on the fear of impending death. In comparison to the prey of lions, the animals struggle for a short period, before giving in to fate, acknowledging the part it had played.
Some cultures are more aware than others that death isn’t something to fear, rather something to embrace. It is merely a small part of the cycle of life. These cultures even revere their ancestors in a manner that brings them peace, and guides them. They respect those that are gone, and remember the wisdom they imparted while they were here. However, many seem to have lost their sense of life’s wonders, and the sacredness of death in our culture. In this day and age, we have come to expect a reason behind anything, and require evidence before believing. It is something that goes in an endless cycle of proving and disproving and believing. This has given us a misplaced sense of importance, rather than knowledge of how vast and unimaginable the universe truly is.
Somehow, we live on a planet that has the perfect conditions for life to grow. Earth is in just the right distance from the Sun to allow the planet to be habited. The Sun, in turn, is merely a part of a galaxy that is part of several million other galaxies that are hurtling through space. Yet we think that death is something to be feared, rather than think about how miraculous it is to even be alive. As the world spins, death occurs constantly. Every time we defeat a challenge, an old perception dies and a new one is born. Relationships die, and then a new one blossoms. In this way, death makes way for life in more than one way.
In our past, we have seen this numerous times: an empire rises, falls and a new one is born. Meteorites hit, wiping out 95% of life, allowing new species to be born and prosper. Philosophies change, born as reactions against the old ways. Life and death are forever concepts. One certainty about life is that death follows when its time to move to the next cycle, whatever one might believe that to be. Many people spend their whole lives dreading it, planning it and obsessing about it. But the truth is, it is over in an instant. The timing isn’t something any of us can know, but when its over, its over. There isn’t anything you can do about it, and there’s no way to control it. Would it not be more constructive to use that energy to enjoy each precious day?
Spending valuable time and energy worrying about the future is known as projecting. People do this instinctively, when we feel we have power over the future. However, since we don’t have power over when we die, wouldn’t the time be better used living to the fullest? When the time comes, we often hope to have everything in order, with goodbyes said and debts paid. However, it is important to remember that we can’t see the bigger picture, nor do we decide what part we play in this enormous act that we don’t fully understand.
Death can provide a lesson in forgiveness, compassion, grieving and letting go. However, the death of a loved one can often cause great pain, but it can be used to gain a greater understanding of death, or lead to a spiritual awakening. It is entirely possible that the life on Earth is the hard part, and death is the great part where we are released from the body and lessons we’ve learned. Regardless of what happens or what anyone thinks may happen, it isn’t certain. What is important is spending your time in a way that isn’t wasted. Don’t fear death, or worry about what happens after- you will learn eventually. In the meantime, there is much to enjoy from nature to love, learning, playing and living. The today is where we are, tomorrow can wait.
