Halle Berry Felt Let Down by the Aftermath of Her Historic Oscar Win
Halle Berry, 59, admits she expected more from her groundbreaking Oscar victory. In a recent interview with The Cut, the actress revealed that becoming the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress didn’t have the impact she had hoped for.
“That Oscar didn’t necessarily change the course of my career,” Berry said, reflecting on her 2002 win for her role as a grieving mother and widow in Monster’s Ball.
Halle Berry Says Race Limited Her Career Even After Historic Oscar Win
Halle Berry reflected on her 2002 Best Actress Oscar win, admitting that the accolade didn’t immediately open doors in Hollywood.
“After I won it, I thought there was going to be, like, a script truck showing up outside my front door,” Berry said. “While I was wildly proud of it, I was still Black that next morning.”
The X-Men star also revealed that her race continued to hold her back in casting decisions. “Directors were still saying, ‘If we put a Black woman in this role, what does this mean for the whole story? Do I have to cast a Black man? Then it’s a Black movie. Black movies don’t sell overseas,’” Berry recalled.
