It was an unexpected, extra-large surprise.
A Florida mother was left in disbelief after delivering a baby boy nearly double the size of a typical newborn — a gigantic bundle of joy that broke the hospital’s record.
Daniella Hines, 40, told TODAY she experienced unusual pain and pressure during her C-section at St. Joseph’s Hospital-South in Riverview on Sept. 3.
Everything became clear when nurses introduced her to her son, Annan — an astonishing 13 pounds, 15 ounces.
Baby boy Annan, wrapped snugly in a blanket, weighed an astonishing 13 pounds, 15 ounces.
“I remember thinking, ‘What are they pulling out of me? What is happening?’” Hines recalled.
“I felt so much pressure. He was enormous. I thought, ‘…’”
Whose baby is this? He came out of me?’” Daniella Hines said she experienced unusual pain and pressure during her C-section, unaware of just how large her newborn was. The mother of two explained that the discomfort she felt during this delivery was very different from the birth of her older son, who himself weighed an impressive 12 pounds, 11 ounces. Hines, an entrepreneur, attributes her baby’s remarkable size to her and her husband’s tall stature — both standing around six feet — noting that her son was roughly the size of a 4-month-old infant. “He became the talk of the maternity ward,” Hines told TODAY. “Then everyone started coming in — it’s not every day you see an almost 14-pound baby arrive. He was like a little celebrity,” Hines said. The hospital shared photos of the enormous newborn on Facebook, calling Annan a “miracle” and noting that he might be the largest baby ever born there. Hines, who was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during her pregnancy, described her son as “really chill” — at least until hunger strikes — and said she can’t wait to continue showering him with love as he grows. The Florida hospital where Annan was born said he might be the largest baby ever delivered there. “We didn’t expect such a big blessing,” the proud mother said. “But it just means more to love. I can’t wait to show him when he’s older and say, ‘Look, you were in the news!’” For context, Guinness World Records notes that the heaviest baby ever recorded weighed 22 pounds and was born in Italy in 1955.
