Distressing CCTV footage has captured the moment a man lost control of a heavy barbell at a gym, resulting in fatal injuries.
Ronald Montenegro, a 55-year-old from Brazil, was weightlifting when the bar slipped from his hands and struck his chest.
Other gym members immediately went to assist him. Although he was briefly able to stand, he collapsed moments later.
Montenegro, who worked as a museum manager, was transported to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. He later died from his injuries, according to reports.
Video footage shows Ronald Montenegro losing control of a barbell and it falling onto his chest during a gym workout.
Bystanders at the gym rushed to help, but Montenegro collapsed just seconds after the barbell struck his chest.
The freak accident occurred on Monday at the fitness centre in Olinda, on Brazil’s northeast coast, where he was a regular member.
The Palacio dos Bonecos Gigantes museum, where Montenegro served as president, confirmed his death in a statement, describing him as a vital part of the institution’s history and success.
Police have launched an inquiry, but early findings indicate the incident was accidental.
RW Academia, the gym involved, also issued a tribute on social media, thanking staff who immediately called for emergency assistance and expressing condolences to Montenegro’s family and friends.
The gym shared that he would be remembered with admiration and affection by everyone who knew him.
Video of the accident has circulated online, prompting shock over how quickly the situation turned fatal. Viewers also expressed concern that Montenegro appeared to be lifting without a spotter, with many urging others to prioritise safety while weightlifting.
RW Academia shared a tribute online expressing sympathy and support for Montenegro’s loved ones.
Reactions to the incident have continued to spread across social media, with many people expressing shock at how suddenly the tragedy unfolded. “Life changed in a matter of seconds,” one commenter wrote.
A family member, who requested anonymity, told local media that Montenegro was a frequent gym-goer who trained regularly to stay in shape. They stressed the importance of proper supervision when performing heavy lifts.
“This is a workout that requires a trainer,” the relative said, according to reports. “In the video, you can see he was fine — he even completes a set, stretches his arms, and prepares for another. But when he sits down again, he can’t manage it and the bar slips.
“What we want is for gyms to prioritise prevention with this type of equipment. Trainers shouldn’t allow students to lift alone, even if they know the movement.”
