Idris Elba has said he does not view a Black actor playing James Bond as a likely possibility. Reflecting on years of speculation linking him to the iconic 007 role, Elba told British GQ that the rumors were “never legit” and remained just that — rumors.

The actor said he appreciated the public support and interest in seeing him as Bond, but noted that the character was originally created with a specific identity in mind. Elba also suggested that casting decisions are influenced by global audience expectations, adding that some international markets may be less receptive to such a change.

“James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it,” Elba said, while emphasizing that the long-running speculation never developed into a serious opportunity.

Idris Elba, who appears on the cover of British GQ’s Summer 2026 issue, said he believes it is “not a realistic thing” for a Black actor to portray James Bond.

Idris Elba said he does not believe audiences around the world would accept a Black actor in the role of James Bond, arguing that the franchise’s global appeal makes such a casting decision unlikely.

The Masters of the Universe star suggested that viewers in some markets may not respond positively to significant changes to the character, saying, “That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

Elba also questioned the need to significantly alter the long-running spy franchise. While acknowledging the fictional nature of Bond, he said the series should remain true to its established identity.

“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” he said. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”

Elba added that, “in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that.”

Elba, who also appears in Masters of the Universe, said he believes the next James Bond should not be shaped by “woke” considerations, suggesting the character should remain unchanged in its traditional form.

However, he previously expressed a more open view toward the role when casting speculation first emerged in 2015. Speaking to Variety at the time, Elba noted the global enthusiasm surrounding the idea of him playing 007.

“If human beings want to know if there’s any connectivity between all of us, the one thing I’ve heard around the world universally is that, ‘You’ll be great at James Bond,’” he said.

Elba added that widespread public support could be meaningful, saying, “If it should happen, that’s proof there’s connectivity amongst human beings. If everyone wants something, they can make it happen.”

Elba also said that speculation about him playing James Bond was “never legit” and “always just a rumor” (Daniel Craig is pictured above in the 2006 film Casino Royale).

In 2023, speaking on the SmartLess podcast, Elba said he was initially “super complimented” by the long-running Bond rumors but that the conversation eventually became uncomfortable due to racial backlash surrounding the idea of him taking on the role.

“Those that weren’t happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting, because it became about race,” he said.

“It became about nonsense, and I got the brunt of it.”

In 2023, Elba said he was no longer interested in playing James Bond, citing the racial backlash he received over speculation about him taking on the role (Roger Moore is pictured above in the 1983 film Octopussy).

Michelle Yeoh, Pierce Brosnan in "Tomorrow Never Dies"

Amazon, which now owns the James Bond franchise, is continuing its search for the next actor to portray 007 (Michelle Yeoh and Pierce Brosnan are pictured above in the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies).

Daniel Craig was the most recent actor to play James Bond, retiring from the role after 2021’s No Time to Die. Before him, the character was portrayed on screen by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan.

Amazon assumed creative control of the franchise from longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson last year and is currently developing the next installment, which will be directed by Dune: Part Three filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.

Among the actors frequently rumored to be in contention for the role are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill, Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Theo James.
