Beloved by millions of Britons and admired by people from every corner of the globe, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, holds a place as one of the most renowned members of the British royal family.
Since joining one of the world’s most influential households, Kate has endeared herself to the public, reminiscent of the late Princess Diana, by striving to embody the essence of a princess for the people.
Throughout the years, the monarchy has evolved, witnessing subtle changes and modernizations in traditions while discarding others entirely. However, one steadfast aspect remains: the royal dress code, tailored to reflect the duties and responsibilities of the monarchy.
In the realm of stunning ensembles, Kate Middleton reigns supreme as one of the most impeccably dressed women.
She isn’t limited to donning exclusively high-priced attire from globally recognized designers; instead, Kate Middleton often opts for ‘affordable’ ensembles crafted by local designers. Furthermore, her penchant for recycling certain garments over the years has earned her widespread acclaim.
On the auspicious occasion of her public debut as the Princess of Wales, Kate graced the event in a stunning yellow dress from the British label Karen Millen, a choice that, according to fashion expert Miranda Holder, was anything but happenstance.
“Princess Kate’s wardrobe is arguably the most pivotal among the royals today—every ensemble meticulously dissected worldwide the instant she steps into the public sphere,” she informed Newsweek.
“The inclusion of High Street pieces in her wardrobe, like every other aspect, will have been meticulously planned, as the significance of each subtle style statement is recognized by the palace to convey a significant message to the world.

“Recently, we’ve observed Kate revisiting and reviving some beloved designer pieces, a practice that not only maintains the princess’s relevance and approachability but also underscores her versatility. Incorporating High Street fashion into her wardrobe serves as another avenue for achieving this,” Holder elaborated.
“In this thoroughly modern monarchy, the princess and Prince William have consistently demonstrated, through various means including their attire, their affinity with and proximity to the people,” Holder remarked.
Moreover, Holder noted that now that Kate holds the title of princess, her attire may tend towards a more formal style.
Among the plethora of dresses Kate has donned in recent years, one in particular captured the imagination of the general public. Specifically, at the London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise, Kate graced the event in a black floor-length Roland Mouret gown, featuring a striking white off-the-shoulder neckline, priced at around $600.
According to royal expert Daniela Elser, Kate allocated a staggering $337,000 to her wardrobe expenditures last year.
Kate’s fashion influence, which sets trends, is famously referred to as the “Kate effect,” capturing the widespread fascination with her wardrobe choices.
The inception of the “Kate effect” dates back to 2010, following her engagement announcement with Prince William. At that time, the then-duchess donned a sapphire blue dress by the brand Issa. Vanity Fair reported that within 24 hours, the dress was completely sold out online.
In her book, “The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Modern Royal Style,” Bethan Holt, fashion news and features director at The Telegraph, noted, “Would any dress have had the same effect? No. There was something about the Issa. It made Kate look glamorous yet respectful; she wasn’t trying to seem more mature than she was, but nor did the dress depict her as a slave to fashion.”
According to reports from the Express and Newsweek, the “Kate effect” is estimated to potentially contribute £1 billion to the UK fashion industry.

“Diana often conveyed a narrative through her clothing, reflecting the significant evolution of her personal life. In contrast, the queen’s essence lies in maintaining a consistent image,” Holt explained to Vanity Fair. “The current public sentiment leans more towards relatable royals rather than those who remain distant in their palaces. The royals recognize that clothing can bridge this gap.”
“There’s no better way to connect than by saying, ‘Hey, you can buy the same Zara jeans I’m wearing right now for £30.’ Kate has had many of these relatable experiences. She embarked on a gap year, enjoyed city life after university, and we’ve seen her in work settings. Many women can relate to these experiences. She’s also spoken about ‘mum guilt,’ shared insights into the box sets they watch, and even their choice of takeaway,” Holt elaborated.
Bethan Holt, alongside other fashion authorities, posits that Kate’s selection of attire conveys distinct messages to various demographics.
During the period when Meghan and Harry were still based in the UK and participating in royal engagements alongside other members of the monarchy, Kate was frequently observed wearing beige. Simultaneously, both the late Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle donned ensembles in the same hue, prompting speculation among royal experts that this synchrony was deliberate rather than coincidental.
Royal expert Elizabeth Holmes perceives it as a symbol of solidarity amidst the challenging times the royal family was experiencing.
“To see them all in the same hue felt like a gesture of unity,” Holmes remarked. “Furthermore, The Queen’s statement of support for the Sussexes on January 13 added weight to this interpretation. Kate’s choice of brown on Monday morning was also intriguing, especially after she had been drawn into the media coverage.”
“Kate sported two brown pieces: a khaki coat and a brown turtleneck—both prominently visible in the shoulders-up shot of her driving the children to school. While it could be coincidental, I suspect otherwise!” she added.
During a visit to medical colleges focused on maternal healthcare alongside Princess Anne, Kate donned a cream dress adorned with lace pineapples.
According to The New York Times, “Pineapples have emerged as a potent symbol for women grappling with infertility. The fruit features prominently in the profile pictures and social media feeds of women within online infertility communities.”
The publication continued, “Traditionally known as a symbol of hospitality and warmth, pineapples have taken on a new significance in the context of infertility. On platforms like Instagram, the hashtag #PineappleTribe aims to unite women undergoing IVF.”
The Royal Insta Blog also commented on the princess’s choice of wearing a pineapple motif: “By displaying or wearing the pineapple, individuals can silently convey a shared experience of a significant life event or actively voice support to raise awareness and funding for infertility issues,” as quoted by Hello magazine.
When Kate selects a specific color to wear, it often carries a particular message. In the case of her pink ensembles, she tends to convey a sense of playfulness.
“According to color psychology, which the royals do take into account, pink symbolizes fun, femininity, flirtation, and romance,” explained fashion expert Samantha Harman. “Kate aims to portray herself as fun-loving and kind, and while some may already perceive her as such, her choice of pink outfits suggests she’s allowing herself to unwind a bit.”
It’s evident that Kate Middleton has evolved into a fashion icon over the years.
