Accompanied by a photo of himself lying beside Monroe in her hospital bed, Gunnar began his heartfelt caption with a forewarning that it would be different from his usual posts. He described the sudden turn in their lives, starting with Monroe’s seemingly innocuous symptoms— a persistent cough, sporadic fever, and unusual bruising on her legs—prompting a hospital visit by his wife.
The diagnosis unfolded rapidly: plummeting white blood cell count, depleted platelets, low hemoglobin, and a dire need for transfusions. The medical journey ahead included a bone marrow biopsy, flow cytometry, spinal taps, and chemotherapy, culminating in Monroe being eligible for Make-A-Wish.
