Instilling the Importance of Affection Boundaries in Kids: Critiques Arise as Australian Government Promotes Respect Matters Program

The initiative gaining popularity in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria instructs young children to communicate with their grandmothers about their preferences regarding physical affection. Instead of passively accepting cheek kisses, children are urged to express a preference for hugs. According to Hon Dan Tehan, the Minister of Education in Australia, the program’s objective is to “equip teachers with tools to assist young individuals in navigating issues such as self-respect, respect for others, and the importance of cultivating positive relationships throughout their lives.”
Margie Buttris, a childhood educator with HUSHeducation Australia spoke to the Mirror, explaining:
“We’re talking about situations such as Grandma wants to swoop in for the big sloppy kiss and if the child doesn’t want that to happen what can they do,” she said. “They can respectfully say: ‘No thanks Grandma, let’s have a hug instead’.”

Respect Matters is just one of the programs in Australia dedicated to educating young children on these issues. Another initiative, Respectful Relationships, emphasizes the significance of respect in personal relationships. Their website outlines:
“Respectful Relationships supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes, and behaviors. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience, and confidence.”
Despite these well-intentioned programs, a significant number of individuals are not embracing them.

As reported by the Mirror, critics argue that children require affection and should be educated that hugs and kisses on the cheek from family members are appropriate.
While acknowledging the necessity for setting boundaries, opponents contend that the current delineation is misguided. They emphasize the distinction between a stranger kissing a child on the cheek and a grandparent engaging in the same affectionate gesture.
