Remembered as an exceptional comedian, Robin Williams had the remarkable ability to transform any room with laughter within minutes, regardless of its initial atmosphere. His sudden passing in 2014 left the global community in shock, especially as details of his struggles with depression and personal challenges came to light.
Six years after his departure, the enduring love and admiration for this iconic actor, comedian, and singer persist. Williams possessed a distinctive talent for connecting with people from diverse backgrounds, and among those connections was one with Koko, a gorilla proficient in sign language. In a 2014 tribute video, Koko’s caregivers shared a touching moment from 2001 when the two first met.

The video highlights Williams’ extraordinary ability to bring joy into people’s lives, and it was precisely this talent that led to his meeting with Koko. The Gorilla Foundation, responsible for caring for Koko and other gorillas, had approached the star.
Several months earlier, Koko had experienced the loss of her closest companion, Michael. Witnessing her sadness, withdrawal, and depression after the passing of her friend, the foundation sought a way to uplift her spirits and reached out to Robin Williams. The comedian willingly agreed to attempt to bring joy back into the gorilla’s life.

Following the interaction, Williams discussed the encounter in an interview with Today:
“We experienced something truly remarkable: Laughter,” Williams expressed. “Koko comprehends spoken English and employs over 1,000 signs to convey her emotions and thoughts about daily occurrences, life, love, and even death. It was a phenomenal and indelible experience.”
The video capturing their meeting vividly illustrates the ease with which the two connected, just a brief while after their initial meeting. Koko engages playfully with Williams, playfully trying on his glasses, and even cheekily pilfering his pocket to sift through his wallet.

Several years after their initial meeting, news of Robin Williams’ death in 2014 reached Koko, leaving her shocked and saddened. As per her caregiver at the Gorilla Foundation, Koko displayed a visible reaction, lowering her gaze and ceasing her movements upon learning of Williams’ passing. Moments later, she communicated her sorrow by signing “cry” in American Sign Language. The aged gorilla seemed authentically moved and profoundly saddened by the loss of the beloved comedian.
Regrettably, Koko herself passed away in 2018 at the respectable age of 46, a noteworthy lifespan for a gorilla.
