Warning Women Everywhere: Her Experience of Losing Legs Due to a Common Household Product
Lauren Wasser, a woman from California, is recounting her life journey to raise awareness and spare other women from experiencing the ordeal she endured due to a commonly used product.
In 2012, Lauren sought medical attention when persistent flu-like symptoms troubled her. Regrettably, after undergoing tests, doctors identified that the cause of her distress was not the flu but rather toxic shock syndrome resulting from bacterial toxins.
The source of the infection was identified as a tampon. Prolonged use of tampons can trigger this infection, ultimately resulting in toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
Tragically, Lauren slipped into a coma for more than a week, and upon regaining consciousness, doctors had to amputate her leg due to the severity of the infection. This occurred when she was just 24 years old.
Since the tragic incident, Lauren has dedicated herself to raising awareness and pursuing a legal battle against Kotex Natural Balance, the tampon brand responsible for her severe reaction.
Inevitably facing the amputation of her other leg in the coming months, Lauren acknowledges the unavoidable reality. She expresses, “There’s nothing I can do about it. But what I can do is help make sure that this doesn’t happen to others,” as she shared with The Daily Mail.
Highlighting the significance of consumer awareness, she emphasizes in InStyle, “Considering that the vagina is the most absorbent part of a woman’s body and is a gateway to many of our vital organs, it is crucial that consumers know the reality of what could happen to them.”
After her second amputation, Lauren took a photo alongside Paralympic athlete Amy Purdy, who has also undergone leg amputations.
In the caption, Lauren expressed her anticipation for the upcoming changes in her life, stating, “Life is about to be so different, again! I’m in great spirits though and ready for my next chapter. ???♀️??♂️ // photo by my love @camraface.”
