Regrettably, we share somber news concerning the versatile actress Kathy Bates with a heavy heart…

If you think Hollywood celebrities are vastly different from ordinary folks, poignant stories like this one serve as a poignant reminder that they, too, are just regular people facing pain and challenges.

During her recent interview with Dr. Phil, Academy Award winner Kathy Bates candidly shares details about her illness and the silent battles she endured without disclosing them to the world.

Unexpectedly, life handed her the most challenging role of all – that of a real-life fighter and warrior, battling cancer for the second time. In 2012, she summoned the strength to reveal to US Weekly, “It’s no secret that I am an ovarian cancer survivor, nine years and counting. But few know that several weeks ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer.” Describing the experience of being diagnosed with this disease, she adds, “You think American Horror Story is scary? You should’ve been in that room with me.”

Upon learning the devastating news of her ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2003, her challenging journey unfolded. Enduring numerous painful surgeries and undergoing nine months of chemotherapy, she made a conscious decision to keep it a secret. Speaking to PEOPLE, she shared:

“I didn’t tell anybody. I continued to work right after the operation, doing Little Black Book with Brittany Murphy. My agent at the time was very old-school and didn’t want me to be the poster child for ovarian cancer. I didn’t want anyone to know, but it really took a lot out of me.”

Her resilience enabled her to overcome the situation, remaining cancer-free until the moment when her doctor delivered the news that she was back at square one. Faced with the recurrence of cancer, she pondered whether she would have to tread the same path of pain and suffering once again.

Upon discovering she had breast cancer, the revelation didn’t come as a complete surprise to her, acknowledging that “breast cancer runs like a river in my family.” Choosing to share this information with her followers, she made the proactive decision to undergo a double mastectomy in the hope of halting its further progression.

In this challenging time, she opted to transform her personal tragedy into inspiration for other women. Despite the adversity, this courageous woman retained her vibrant personality. On one occasion, she even lightened the mood by joking, “I don’t miss my breasts as much as I miss Harry’s Law,” while expressing gratitude to her fans for the unwavering support they provided during her difficult moments.

She did her best to replace the plate of sour green tomatoes her life served her with one of Fried Green Tomatoes instead, and we are lucky she did it.

Presently, Kathy Bates is free from cancer, yet the illness has bestowed upon her a lasting condition called lymphedema, which is incurable and impacts approximately 30 percent of breast cancer survivors. This condition arises from the removal of her lymph nodes, causing her discomfort with pain and swelling.

Describing it as a “souvenir you definitely don’t want,” she candidly shares the emotional toll, expressing, “I really felt that life was over for me. I probably wouldn’t work again, and I was angry for a long time.”

This whole experience made her speak about her condition publicly in hopes of inspiring other women to do regular check-ups and to know they are not alone in their battle. Bates also became an ambassador for the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN).

“I appreciate that my challenges have provided me with a sense of purpose. It’s funny how life unfolds.”

Here is her interview where she candidly discusses the raw emotions of confronting the battles she has faced.
