Numerous offspring of renowned artists often strive to establish their own identities apart from their parents’ legacies. Among them is Julian Lennon, the eldest son of former Beatles member John Lennon. Julian, now in his 50s, has always expressed reluctance to step into his father’s shadow by covering one of John’s most iconic songs, “Imagine.” However, a compelling reason emerged in 2022 that led him to reconsider his stance.
Born to John’s first wife, Cynthia Lennon, on April 8, 1963, Julian has matured into an accomplished musician who bears an uncanny resemblance to his famous father. Despite their striking likeness, their relationship was far from harmonious.
While the public image of the Lennon family may have appeared idyllic, their relationships were far from smooth. Julian, speaking to The Telegraph, revealed that his father, John, often preached about love to the world but seldom demonstrated it within his own family.
“Dad was a hypocrite. He could espouse peace and love to the world, but he struggled to exhibit those qualities to his wife and son,” Julian bitterly remarked in a particularly infamous interview during the 1980s.
In fact, John wasn’t even present for Julian’s birth. As reported by Express, Cynthia had to endure labor alone while the Beatle flew to the other side of the continent. Some experts argue that this absence was a common practice in the early 1960s, where fathers were seldom expected to be present during childbirth. Nevertheless, in John’s case, this absence appeared more as a pattern than a mere tradition.
Despite the difficulties he faced in his relationship with his father, Julian has come to terms with his family’s history and found it in himself to forgive past grievances. In 2022, he made a significant decision to leverage his status as a renowned son for a charitable mission.

In April 2022, a Stand Up For Ukraine event was initiated to raise funds for those impacted by the Ukrainian war. Julian, who had previously vowed never to perform “Imagine,” felt an immediate need to contribute. He shared a video of his heartfelt rendition of the iconic song on YouTube, which has since garnered over 2.9 million views. In the video’s description, Julian expressed, “The War on Ukraine is an unimaginable tragedy … As a human and as an artist, I felt compelled to respond in the most significant way I could.”
He also explained the reason behind breaking his vow, stating, “Why now, after all these years? — I had always said that the only time I would ever consider singing ‘IMAGINE’ would be if it was the ‘End of the World’… But also because his lyrics reflect our collective desire for peace worldwide. Within this song, we’re transported to a space where love and togetherness become our reality, if only for a moment in time… The song represents the light at the end of the tunnel that we are all hoping for…”
Julian, in an interview with Consequence, admitted that he was “fearful” of performing the song but was “overwhelmed by the response.” He added, “The only thing I can say about it was that it was the easiest thing to do and the hardest thing to do.” As for performing it again, he responded, “I’ve had a few requests to sing it live, and I’m going, ‘No, I’ve done my part. That’s it. I’m moving forward with my work and my life now.’ I have a strong desire to continue with my own life and my own endeavors.”
