Cultivating a bond between humans and their animals is a priceless connection, particularly when they share their daily existence. Individuals ensure the well-being of their cherished pets, providing them with essential care such as shelter and nourishment. In return, these animals offer unwavering love and emotional solace.

In a report by WBTV published in July 2023, we learned about Karina Courtmanche, a 79-year-old woman under hospice care. She had shared three decades of her life with her beloved horse, Bella, nurturing the exquisite creature from its earliest days.

As her health continued to decline after more than a year of medical care, Karina Courtmanche harbored a poignant final wish—to share one last farewell with her cherished horse before her earthly journey reached its conclusion.

Gratefully, Courtmanche’s wish materialized with the unwavering support of her dedicated nurses, who consistently ensured she received the utmost care.

During a heartfelt interview, Michelle Walker, the RN Case Manager at Connecticut Hospice, divulged the profound significance of fulfilling their patient’s request, given the deep affection Courtmanche held for her horse.

Walker recounted how the gentle, elderly lady frequently spoke about Bella in their conversations. “We were conversing with her, and she kept mentioning her horse, Bella, expressing her longing to see her,” she shared.

The logistical challenge of relocating a visibly ailing Courtmanche was formidable, but their collective determination prevailed. They orchestrated the transfer from hospice care to Bittersweet Farm, where her beloved equine companion resided.

Andrew Rennie, a dedicated member of the American Medical Response team, provided insight into the successful orchestration of this heartwarming reunion.

“Our medical team, including our EMTs, made a morning visit to Mary Wade to facilitate her transition from her bed to the stretcher, and she will be transported in an ambulance,” he explained.

Leading up to this emotional reunion, Karina Courtmanche had been receiving hospice care at Mary Wade for over a year. Despite her declining health and the indication that her time was limited, her caretakers attested to her enduring love for dressing up, adorning herself with jewelry, and applying makeup.

In the news footage, the elderly woman shared heartwarming moments of connection with her cherished companion, and it appeared that Bella still recognized her.

There were poignant scenes where she tenderly stroked Bella and offered her carrots, even while resting on a stretcher.

“Isn’t it wonderful to see your horse again?” inquired Walker, to which Courtmanche softly replied, “Yes.”

As reported by Olivia Schueller, once Courtmanche passes away, Bella will continue to receive attentive care at Bittersweet Farm.

The same video was shared on YouTube by the news outlet, evoking a flood of emotions among online viewers.

“This was incredibly heartwarming. The bond between a human and an animal is profoundly pure,” one commenter expressed.

Another commenter commended the hospice center staff’s compassionate gesture, stating, “What a beautiful and compassionate act by the staff. Most hospice centers wouldn’t go to such lengths.”
