In 2019, when Elton John released his memoir “Me,” it generated tremendous anticipation among readers eager for a behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry. However, what took many by surprise was the deeply personal insight it provided into his close friendship with the iconic rock legend Freddie Mercury.
Within the pages of the book, Elton vividly portrayed the last gift he received, along with the accompanying message.

Elton John found himself in the unique position of being one of the very few individuals granted access to witness Freddie Mercury in his final moments. Within the pages of his memoir, he openly shared his emotional experience of seeing his friend deteriorate due to an undisclosed illness that he had kept hidden from the world.
According to OK, Elton described the heart-wrenching scene, recounting, “He was too frail to get out of bed, he was losing his sight, his body was covered in Kaposi’s sarcoma lesions, and yet he was still unmistakably Freddie, chatting animatedly and exhibiting his trademark audacity.”
He went on to reflect, “I couldn’t determine whether he remained oblivious to how close he was to the end of his life or if he was acutely aware but resolute in not allowing his condition to suppress his true self.”

Elton also describes the fact that Freddie was always thinking of others even in moments where he should have been concentrating on himself. He spent time in the hospital recording with his bandmates Queen to record “Made in Heaven,” and he also remembered to give Christmas presents to his dear friends.
“By all rights, Freddie should have spent those final days concerned only with his own comfort. But that wasn’t who he was. He truly lived for others,” he wrote in his memoir as per OK.
“Freddie had passed on November 24, 1991, and weeks after the funeral, I was still grieving. On Christmas Day, I learnt that Freddie had left me one final testament to his selflessness. I was moping about when a friend showed up at my door and handed me something wrapped in a pillowcase. I opened it up, and inside was a painting by one of my favourite artists, the British painter Henry Scott Tuke. And there was a note on the front from Freddie.

Elton went on to reveal the contents of the note, a gesture that deeply touched his heart.
“Years earlier, Freddie and I had playfully bestowed upon each other endearing nicknames as our drag-queen alter egos. I became Sharon, and he was Melina. Freddie’s message read, ‘Dear Sharon, I thought you’d appreciate this. With love, Melina. Merry Christmas.'”
Elton, who was 44 years old at the time, was overwhelmed with emotion, shedding tears like a child. He recounted this poignant moment in his book, as reported by OK magazine.
He shared, “In those final days, as this remarkable man battled AIDS, he somehow managed to find a heartfelt Christmas gift for me. As sorrowful as that moment was, it remains the one etched in my memory when I think of Freddie. It captures the essence of his character, both in life and in his passing.”
