Americans hold deep respect for several symbols, including the flag and their veterans, but one that stands out is the national anthem. “The Star-Spangled Banner” served as the official anthem of the United States before 1931. For those unfamiliar with its origins, the lyrics are derived from the poem “Defence of Fort M’Henry,” written in September 1814 by amateur poet Francis Scott Key.
Key was an eyewitness to the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore. It was this event, along with the sight of the magnificent U.S. flag, that inspired the creation of the lyrics that every proud American knows by heart.
This anthem is a part of every significant event in the United States, including sports.
During a recent Nashoba Regional High School football game, the rendition of the national anthem by one of the sophomore students, Sam Keith, became an internet sensation and captured the hearts of countless viewers.
What adds an intriguing twist to this story is that Sam Keith, a remarkably gifted singer with an enchanting voice, is also a football player. He took center stage with the microphone in hand, donning his jersey emblazoned with the number 59 and holding his helmet as he passionately sang the renowned lyrics.
It’s widely believed that Keith’s performance will be etched into the annals of Nashoba High history.
