Quiz shows have held the fascination of audiences for generations. When discussing these shows, one of the first names that springs to mind is Bob Barker, an entertainment legend and a household name who catapulted to stardom when he graced the stage of “The Price is Right” in 1972.
Barker served as the show’s host for an impressive 35 years, earning him 14 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host and four Emmys for his role as an executive producer during his tenure.
Reflecting on the pinnacle of his career, Barker attributed much of his success to his late wife, stating in 2008, “She gave me the confidence to pursue my ambitions. She didn’t merely encourage me; she stood by my side and worked alongside me.”
Regrettably, his beloved wife, Gideon, succumbed to cancer in 1981 after a 36-year marriage. “I never entertained the thought of remarriage. She was my one and only,” Barker revealed in an interview with ABC News.
Nevertheless, love found its way back into his life, as he formed a lasting bond with Nancy Burnet, his companion for the past 40 years. Burnet always speaks affectionately of Barker. Just before he celebrated his 99th birthday in December, she shared an astonishing revelation concerning the host’s health.
In particular, Burnet disclosed that despite his advanced age, Barker only relies on a single medication, prescribed for his thyroid. She humorously remarked, “He’s approaching 99 and only takes one prescription – that’s for his thyroid. Whenever his healthcare providers or visitors inquire about his medication list, I jokingly show them the one bottle. That’s all there is to it. He doesn’t require medication for blood pressure, cholesterol, or any of the numerous other medications that most people tend to rely on as they age. He’s remarkably healthy for his age, and his sense of humor remains intact. He’s truly had a charmed life.”
This doesn’t imply that Barker hasn’t faced medical emergencies and health challenges over the years. Quite the opposite; more than two decades ago, he underwent surgery to address a partially blocked artery, reducing the risk of a stroke. In 2002, he endured an actual stroke. Shortly thereafter, he underwent prostate surgery. He has also grappled with back issues and has had several instances of mild skin cancer.
Burnet, being a vegetarian herself, ensures that her partner receives all the necessary supplements. She explains, “The supplements aren’t meant to replace meals but to complement them. Bob wasn’t doing well; he appeared fatigued and somewhat frail, not just lacking in good health. When you choose a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, you need to be well-informed and make wise dietary choices.”
In addition to his renowned role as one of the earliest and most iconic quiz show hosts, Barker is also a dedicated advocate for animal rights. One of his well-known catchphrases is, “This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.”
In fact, he adopted a vegetarian lifestyle as a way to align himself with his late wife, who he believes was ahead of her time. Barker shared, “She abandoned fur coats long before it became a trend. She embraced vegetarianism before it gained widespread popularity, and I gradually followed suit in solidarity with her.”
“If young people are introduced to the terrible exploitation and mistreatment of animals in society, it will help influence them in anything they do,” Barker told the Associated Press in 2015. “When your education and encouragement fail, you have to have legislation.”
His deep affection for animals and unwavering commitment to improving our planet for their sake are additional reasons why we hold this man in such high regard. He leverages his celebrity status to bring about positive transformations in the world.
