As weird as it may sound, we are more genetically similar to our friends than we are to strangers. Two professors – Nicholas Christakis, a Greek-American professor of medicine and sociology from Yale University, and James Fowler, a professor of political science and medical genetics from the University of California – analyzed the genomes of almost two thousand people, and then compared pairs of friends with pairs of complete strangers.

None of these pairs had biological ties to each other; the only differences, some were friends, and some were strangers. This study shows that each of us has a similar DNA with our friends, but not with strangers. This may be related to race, since most people make friends with those who share a similar racial background.

We share about 1% of our genes with our friends. This is comparable to the genes we share with our fourth cousins. Many of us have no idea who our fourth cousins are, yet we choose friends who share similar genetic materials.

The two professors have even devised a ‘friendship score’ that can predict who will befriend whom about as accurately as scientists can tell who is more prone to schizophrenia or obesity. Just by focusing on a few individual genes, the researchers are able to show that friends share genes related to the sense of smell, but have different genes that controls the immune system.

The difference in our immune systems seems to be an evolutionary mechanism. If we hang around with people who are vulnerable to different diseases, we are less likely to catch, and spread, a contagious disease with each other.

Professor Christakis says that the genes we have in common with our friends are evolving faster than other genes. He explains that this is possibly due to people become more social beings and sharing more verbally. This is a very important part of the evolutionary process.

According to the esteemed professor, this “research reinforces the notion that humans are transgenic beings.” This is demonstrated not only within the bacteria that thrive on, in and around us daily, but also in the genetic composition within our friends. Now we know why we picked the friends we have; we share more than good times together – we also share our genes.
