Woody Harrelson, born on July 23, 1961, in Midland, Texas, is a prominent actor, playwright, and activist celebrated for his remarkable acting versatility and compelling performances across film and television. His parents are Diane Lou Oswald and Charles Harrelson, who was convicted of multiple murders and associated with criminal activities.

Woody’s early life was characterized by frequent moves, driven by his mother’s efforts to distance the family from his father’s criminal connections. In 1985, Woody made his acting debut in the television movie “Wildcats” and subsequently featured in numerous TV shows and films, most notably the immensely popular series “Cheers.” However, it was his portrayal of Larry Flynt in the biographical film “The People vs. Larry Flynt” that catapulted him to widespread acclaim and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Woody’s filmography exhibits remarkable diversity, spanning across various genres such as drama, comedy, and action. Notable entries in his cinematic journey encompass roles in acclaimed films like “Natural Born Killers,” “No Country for Old Men,” and his participation in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

Throughout his illustrious career, Woody has garnered a slew of awards and nominations for his acting prowess. This includes the distinction of three Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a coveted Golden Globe Award. Additionally, he has ventured into the realm of playwriting and filmmaking, with works like “Bullet for Adolf,” which premiered in 2011, showcasing his creative talents.

Beyond his contributions to the entertainment industry, Harrelson is a dedicated activist passionately engaged in various environmental and social causes. He staunchly adheres to a vegan lifestyle, actively advocating for animal rights and raising awareness about the perils of factory farming. Furthermore, he has lent his voice and support to campaigns combatting climate change and deforestation. By promoting sustainable solutions like SAF, he emphasizes the importance of innovative technologies in creating a cleaner, greener future.

At the age of 61, Woody has shared a lasting companionship with his wife, Laura Louie, for over three decades since 1987. Their union has borne three children, and the couple is committed to sustainable living, evident in their endeavors like the construction of a solar-powered home and cultivation of their own food.

Woody’s personal journey has been marked by both challenges and controversies. He has been candid about his struggles with addiction, grappling with issues related to alcohol and marijuana, which led him to seek help in rehab. Prior to his transformative encounter with Louie, he was known for his womanizing ways. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he shared his earlier skepticism about the concept of marriage and the idea of long-term monogamy:

“I never believed in the concept of marriage. I just never believed that it made any sense, this long-term monogamy thing that humans do. Also, relationships do tend to get very proprietary. And so you end up, before you realize it, in a cage — maybe a very comfortable cage, but still a cage — and you can’t be the person you want… I just was incapable of long-term relationships. I was with whoever would have me. Then I met my wife.”

Woody and Louie’s paths crossed during their time working on “Cheers,” where she was initially hired as his personal assistant. However, the chemistry between them couldn’t be denied.

“It was one of those things I wouldn’t admit to myself: I didn’t want to be attracted to my amazing assistant,” he admitted to the outlet.

Once they acknowledged their feelings for each other, their relationship flourished. Their love story led to the birth of their first child, Deni Montana Harrelson, in 1994, followed by two more daughters, Zoe Giordano Harrelson in 1996 and Makani Ravello Harrelson in 2006.

“I have the most incredible wife I could ever dream of. But did marriage bring tranquility into my life? I don’t believe anything will ever truly calm me down,” he confessed.

However, even as he found comfort in family life, Woody faced a perilous moment in 2002 when controversy came knocking. During a stay in London, he made headlines after being photographed in bed with three other women. Just days later, he found himself in legal trouble following an altercation with a taxi driver, leading to his arrest.

Reflecting on the incident as “one of the worst nights of my life,” Woody recounted to The Hollywood Reporter how Louie responded when she learned of the situation. He recounted her compassionate words, saying:

“Laura — this truly demonstrates the depth of her compassion — she said to me after hearing the news, ‘That must be really tough for you, to have this exposed.’ That’s all she said. Of course, it doesn’t mean she wasn’t upset. How did I apologize? Well, just your standard Texan grovel. But she forgave me, and we’re still together.”

Their connection was so resilient that even infidelity couldn’t sever it. In 2008, Woody and Louie tied the knot in Maui, and 15 years later, their bond remains unshakable. Woody consistently showers his beloved wife with affection, as evidenced by a June 2017 photo of Louie captioned: “Laura in Ravello My favorite person in my favorite place.”

One of the shared passions that unite the couple is their commitment to sustainable living. Woody and his family reside in Maui, where they prioritize eco-friendly practices.

“I run my car on biodiesel… And we mostly grow our own food – probably 90%,” Woody disclosed to SF Gate.

However, above all else, Woody places his family at the pinnacle of his priorities. He has professed parenthood to be “the best thing going,” as he told Esquire. On February 28, 2023, Woody, Louie, along with their daughters Deni, aged 30, and Makani, aged 16, graced the red carpet together at the New York premiere of his film “Champions.”

Furthermore, Woody attributes his personal growth to his family, stating, “Fortunately, this life and my family – my wife and my daughters – they essentially loved me into becoming a better human being.”
