Ricky, otherwise known as Charlie, is a dog who had been living in a little northern Manhattan park, named Highbridge Park.  The dog had lived there all his life along with other stray and feral dogs. Denise Lauffer, a resident and dog-walker, had adopted three feral dogs and one stray. Charlie was an exception because nobody was able to adopt him because he is good at evading his captors.  Instead of taking him in, Lauffer has been leaving food out for Charlie over the past years.

Lauffer and  many neighbors were  watching Charlie. However, with this winter’s freezing temperatures, everyone was worried about the 10-year-old dog’s prosperity. Residents provided him with food, hay boxes for shelter. They also left out 30 hand warmers for  Charlie. Later, they discovered that he could not make it on his own and  survive the bad winter due to his old age and losing members of his pack .

They always opted for alternative solutions to protect him because they frequently left him hay to snuggle and stay warm in during the freezing weather.

To find a suitable solution for Charlie’s case, neighbors started meeting and connecting with each other.”He’s a famous dog,” said neighbor Yuliya Avezbakiyeva. Yulia and her mother were bringing food and water for Charlie everyday for 5 years.”There are different people, different nationalities, different backgrounds, and this one dog united them all.””We just all happened to bump into each other; we started exchanging phone numbers,” said Tina Ilmet, another resident. However, Lauffer made something exceptional as she started sleeping in a makeshift shelter in the park, in the frigid nights just to gain his trust.

Lauffer was able to gain Charlie’s trust due to living all his life outside and people were feeding him.  He was also a shy dog. By feeding Charlie hot meals and staying out with him,Lauffer managed to make him snuggle with her at night. Finally, a group of residents managed to corral Charlie into a van and took him to  New York City’s Animal Medical Center where he was given a checkup and treatments. Later, he was released to be adopted by  Ilmet’s and Avezbakiyeva.

Charlie was diagnosed with Lyme’s disease, as well as other, possibly age-related ailments. Now, he is doing well at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital  and will finally go home with one of his adopters and be given shelter, love and care.
