A viral photo featuring a group of young women all wearing the same style of clothing has sparked a heated fashion debate online.
Shared on X, the image shows a group of Gen Z women dressed almost identically — each wearing baggy light blue jeans paired with simple, solid-colored tops.
While the combo of loose denim and basic tees is often seen as a classic “off-duty model” look, many fashion enthusiasts were surprised to see the outfit worn for a night out, arguing that it leans more toward daytime casual.
“Does anyone have any theories as to how light-wash jeans became considered evening wear?” the original poster asked.
They added, “After 6 p.m., especially in the colder months, you would rarely see lighter colors than indigo.”
Responses quickly poured in, with some users agreeing that light-wash denim is best reserved for daytime wear. Others, however, were surprised by the idea that certain jeans should be worn only at specific times of day.
“Gen Z doesn’t know how to dress for different times of day or evening yet,” one commenter claimed.
On the other hand, another user pushed back: “There’s no way some people actually believe different colors of jeans are only appropriate for different times of day.”
Echoing the confusion, someone else added, “I didn’t know people thought about jeans this way.”
Others chimed in to point out a broader trend among younger generations — the rise of uniform dressing.
“I can’t believe I sound like an old-timer, but it’s wild how everyone dresses the same now! We may have dressed badly, but at least we had some PERSONALITY!” one commenter wrote, sparking further discussion about individuality in fashion.
According to Tina Grasso, founder of Australian fashion label Chouchou Intimates, the group’s outfit choice reflects a cultural shift in how fashion is approached — particularly among Gen Z.
“The trend of light jeans and a top is a nod to the ‘90s, with icons like Cindy Crawford often seen in similar looks,” Grasso explained. “I see it as part of a broader movement where the lines between daywear and eveningwear are becoming increasingly blurred.”
Grasso, whose team is made up entirely of Gen Z creatives, adds that this new uniform is less about standing out and more about comfort, confidence, and subtle references to past style eras.
“In just the last 24 hours, I’ve seen Hailey Bieber in light jeans paired with a lace top — a perfect example of how day and night fashion are blending,” Grasso added.
She pointed out that the resurgence of ’90s style on social media has had a significant impact on Gen Z’s fashion choices, particularly when it comes to dressing for nights out.
According to Grasso, the choice to wear baggy jeans to bars and clubs can be seen as a quiet rebellion against the more polished, business-casual aesthetics embraced by millennials in similar settings. Instead of conforming to traditional notions of “dressing up,” many Gen Zers are redefining what night-out attire looks like — favoring comfort, individuality, and vintage inspiration over formality.
Grasso also emphasized that Gen Z places a high value on functional fashion — prioritizing outfits that feel comfortable, effortless, and authentic over looks that appear overly polished or curated.
“We’ve seen the ‘jeans and a nice top’ trend really take off, especially on TikTok, where light, baggy denim has become a cornerstone of the so-called ‘effortless’ aesthetic,” she explained.
Fashion influencers like Nadia Bartel, Jessica Abdilla, Martha Kalifatidis, Elena Tea, and Emma Macdonald frequently highlight this versatile combo — styling it for everything from daytime errands to evening events — further cementing its status as a modern uniform for Gen Z.
While Grasso personally views darker denim as the ideal casual bottom for an evening out, she’s quick to emphasize that in today’s fashion landscape, “there are no rules.”
The secret to making light-wash jeans evening-appropriate, she says, lies entirely in the styling.
“You can elevate the look with a kitten heel, bold accessories, or something as simple as a cami and blazer,” she suggested.
Another user commented, “It’s hard to believe some people genuinely think certain jean colors are only suitable at specific times of day.”
When asked why she believes Gen Z tends to dress so similarly, she replied, “All generations do this — we’re all shaped by trends, pop culture, and shared experiences.”
“As a fashion industry founder, I believe designers play a key role in setting these precedents. We create pieces for our audiences that spark trends, which is why you often see so many people wearing similar items.
“When it comes to Gen Z specifically, the ‘cool’ factor tends to hinge more on how you style an outfit rather than the brand or prestige of the piece itself. They genuinely celebrate personal creativity and individuality, which is something I truly admire.”
