The loss of a child is an unparalleled sorrow, a pain that never truly diminishes, no matter how much time passes.
Regrettably, we bear witness to parents bidding farewell to their children, and each time we hear of such heart-wrenching losses, our hearts shatter into countless fragments.
Harmony Harper was a typical girl her age, cherishing moments with friends and eagerly anticipating the new school year. Her first day of school was filled with joy, but tragically, her second day would never come, as her young life was abruptly cut short in a devastating accident.
On the fateful day of Wednesday, August 16th, eight-year-old Harmony was waiting for the school bus alongside her brother in front of their home when another school bus collided with her. Swiftly, first responders arrived at the scene and made every effort to revive her, but she remained unresponsive.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact count of children on board the bus during the accident, but they have confirmed that no other child suffered any injuries.
Jasper Harper, the father of Harmony, shared his recollection of the tragic day that took his daughter’s life.
“On that dreadful day, my wife heard our son screaming for his sister. She rushed outside, and I was abruptly awakened by the urgent cry, ‘I need you now.’ As I hastily dressed, even before I reached the front door, I heard the haunting words, ‘Call 911, my daughter’s life is slipping away.’ She had been playing right outside our home, where she felt safest.”
Neighbors were shaken by the anguished cries of the girl’s mother. She repeatedly exclaimed, “Oh my God, oh my God, my baby.”
One compassionate neighbor expressed, “I desperately wish I could embrace the mother right now. I want her to know that there are countless people here offering their prayers tonight.”
Another resident shared their heartache, saying, “I can only imagine the overwhelming emotions the bus driver must be experiencing. Hearing the mother’s cries of ‘oh my god, oh my god’ truly shattered my heart.”
In their time of need, the family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the funeral expenses. The campaign’s description read, “If you are unable to make a donation, please leave prayers and uplifting words for this grieving family.”
Those who had the privilege of knowing Harmony can only speak in glowing terms of her.
Donna Osborn, the Principal of Oaklawn Elementary, fondly recalled Harmony as someone who “constantly showered others with compliments.”
She further remarked, “Whenever you encountered her, she greeted you with a radiant smile and was consistently the first to embrace everyone with a warm hug each day. Her departure leaves an enormous void, and Harmony’s absence will be deeply felt throughout Oaklawn.”
Superintendent Heather Bohaty was among those who conveyed their deep sorrow regarding Harmony’s tragic passing.
“We are utterly devastated by the loss of one of our students,” she stated. Bohaty also mentioned that “students and staff will receive additional support from social workers from schools across our district” as they navigate this difficult period.
May Harmony rest in peace.
