The Enchanting Journey of Melanie Griffith: From Early Exposure to Fame and Exotic Animals
Melanie Griffith, an actress renowned for her charm and captivating looks, had an extraordinary life journey right from her early years. Being the daughter of the famous blonde bombshell actress Tippi Hedren, she was destined to be familiar with the public eye. Tippi Hedren gained fame when acclaimed director Alfred Hitchcock discovered her in a commercial, making her his muse and close companion.
Griffith’s own foray into showbiz began at an incredibly young age, with her first appearance in a commercial when she was less than a year old. However, her path has been far from perfect, as she faced challenges like a car accident, struggles with alcohol, and three divorces. Despite the hurdles, her childhood was quite extraordinary in many ways. Growing up amidst exotic animals, she had a unique experience. Her mother brought a lion into their home as part of a film project, but unfortunately, the project took a toll on young Griffith, resulting in an injury during filming.
“I grew up with lions, tigers, and two elephants,” Griffith fondly reminisced.
Neil the lion became an integral part of the family, and Life Magazine documented their daily life, capturing heartwarming photos of their unique bond. The unusual sight of the lion sharing a bed with Griffith, sleeping under blankets while the actress rested her head on his back, was a testament to the extraordinary relationship they shared.
Looking back, Griffith couldn’t help but admit, “It was stupid beyond belief.”
During her early years as a child, Griffith dabbled in modeling and even ventured into the world of movies. At the tender age of 12, she starred in her first film, “Extra!,” although she remained uncredited for her role.
At the age of 14, Melanie Griffith secured a role in “The Harrad Experiment.” Little did she know that this would lead her to encounter the first love of her life, director Don Johnson. Their relationship stirred controversy due to their age difference—she was a minor, and Johnson was 22 at the time. However, the intensity of their affection prevailed, and when Griffith turned 15, her mother allowed her to live with him.
As the years passed, their love endured, and at the age of 18, Griffith took another significant step in her life.
“I thought he was the most beautiful person I’d ever seen,” shared Griffith, reflecting on her feelings for Don Johnson.
Her mother, Tippi Hedren, observed the blossoming romance between her daughter and the older man. “They were two beautiful, wonderful people, and here, my daughter was displaying signs I had never seen before in her, with an older man, and there was just sheer panic,” Hedren recalled.

After tying the knot in Las Vegas, their marriage eventually broke down just six months later.
During the 1970s, Melanie Griffith showcased her acting talents in movies like “Night Moves,” “Joyride,” and the film “Roar,” where a harrowing incident occurred. In the latter film, she was injured by a lion, suffering a mauling near the eye. The injuries were severe enough to require plastic surgery, while her mother, Tippi Hedren, also involved in the film, needed skin grafts and battled gangrene.
Reflecting on the incident, Griffith commented, “The lioness didn’t mean to hurt me. After seven years of growing up with lions, I forgot that you have to be cautious. You can never be sure you’re safe, and just a blow can impact you like a ping pong ball,” as reported by The Guardian.
Subsequently, Griffith participated in notable films like “Body Double,” “Something Wild,” and “Working Girl,” which earned her an Academy Award nomination in 1989.
In 1981, Griffith tied the knot with her second husband, Steven Bauer, and they welcomed their son Alexander. However, their marriage eventually came to an end. Subsequently, the actress married Don Johnson for the second time, and together they welcomed their daughter Dakota Johnson, who later became the star of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
“You have to understand that we have a bond, and I love him,” Melanie Griffith expressed, emphasizing, “I will always love Don Johnson. But just because you love someone doesn’t necessarily mean that you can live with them.”
Upon marrying her third husband, actor Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith’s children finally found a reliable father figure they could count on. Banderas became an integral part of their lives and continued to be a significant presence even after he and Griffith divorced in 2014.
Despite the end of their marriage, Griffith and Banderas maintained a remarkably close relationship. Banderas candidly shared his initial feelings of being inexperienced when suddenly faced with the responsibility of caring for Griffith’s 6-year-old daughter, 10-year-old son, and the arrival of Stella shortly after. “I was, ‘Oh, my God!'” he admitted to AARP. However, as the children realized that Banderas was committed to staying by their side, they found comfort and stability. Banderas knew the importance of providing them with a solid foundation to grow upon, so he gradually established his role as a father, offering them security and love.
During a prestigious award ceremony in 2019, as Antonio Banderas received the Hollywood Actor Award, he was honored by the presence of both Dakota Johnson and Melanie Griffith, who jointly presented him with the trophy.
In her touching speech, Dakota Johnson expressed her gratitude for having a loving and supportive family. She remarked, “I come from a family of many marriages, and I got very lucky.” She went on to acknowledge the profound impact of her “bonus dad” – Antonio Banderas – on her life. Recalling the early days when her mother married him, Dakota reminisced, “When I was six years old, my mother married a man who brought an unbelievably bright light, a whole new world of creativity and culture, and one remarkably magical little sister into our family.”
Dakota further shared the immense love and fierceness with which Banderas embraced their family, saying, “He loved my mother, my siblings, and me so big, and so fiercely and so loudly, that it would change all of our lives together.” The speech conveyed a deep appreciation for the positive influence Banderas had on their lives and the close bond they shared as a family.
Presently, Griffith finds herself content and leading a single life, embracing happiness on her own terms.
In 2010, she received the distressing diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Eight years later, she bravely shared with her fans that she had faced cancer and underwent surgery to remove a cancerous cell from her nose.
Reflecting on this challenging experience, the actress candidly expressed, “It’s a scary thing when you’re an actress and your face is vital for your work.” However, she acknowledged the importance of handling the situation with grace, stating, “I realize I have to put a Band-Aid on it, and it’s fine. I just look like a dork.” Griffith’s strength and positive outlook on life shine through, even in the face of adversity.
The positive news is that Melanie Griffith is now feeling fantastic and enjoying excellent health. After her battle with cancer, she became a vocal advocate for cancer awareness and actively supports the initiatives of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
