- A Depression Epidemic
More than twenty percent of the population of the United States will have at least once experience with clinical depression. We need to take a closer look at why this is happening in order to understand it. Our cultural values and lifestyles can be depressing. Most of the time we use the term clinical depression incorrectly. Most of our depression is situational. We are depressed due to our life situations not a disease. In some situation it even makes sense to be depressed.
- Are We Lost?
Many of our lives are lacking a deeper purpose. They may seem pointless at time. Our culture values success and achievements. If we do not make external achievements it hurts our inner selves. We often become disconnect and disenchanted from what we really value. We tend to put more pride in material items then our intimate relationships with ourselves and others.
People involved in loving relationships do not usually experience depression. One of the biggest feelings associated with depression is isolation. In order to get more possessions we often isolate ourselves from our important relationships. We are too busy to value our loved ones. This busy pace makes life lose its meaning. We do not have times for our families and ourselves. We do not know how to live well.
- Are People Dysfunctional?
Our people are not dysfunctional but rather our social systems are. People have emotions and feelings. We have created the term of dysfunction.
Many people do not feel like they have a higher purpose in life. We want to conform and lose ourselves in the process. Our cultural belief system ignores matters of the heart. We look down on those who are suffering and further victimize them. If we begin to look at the depressing things about our lives we can begin to get to the bottom of the problem. We can also find out what our souls are missing. Depression comes to the surface for a reason. We are crying out for love and attention. Depression is telling us we have lost the joy in daily life.
People that feel fulfillment in their family and their job do not become as depressed. People who are in touch with their inner self have less incidents of depression. People that are able to keep their sense of wonder at not depressed. Depression should be looked at as a warning sign that we are losing touch with what is important to use. Our disconnection with things that make us happy can lead to depression.
Depression used to be associated with a deeply sad feeling. There are some life events that can make us sad. When going through this life situation people are not told there is something wrong with them. We have lost our compassion now that we have labeled a person has depressed.
- Is Society Making Depressed People?
We should be happy and if we are not there is something wrong with us. Life is difficult at times. Calling a person depressed is only hurting them more. There are people who are clinically depressed but many are just going through tough times.
Depression should be used to make some positive changes. Depression can make sense at time. People who are abused, isolated, and suffering from a lost have a right to be sad. People need to face these situations and make positive changes in their life. The person has to be treated, not the label of depression. We cannot dehumanize these people any longer.
- Situational Depression
Depression can be situational. Losing a loved one, illness, job loss, and similar events do cause pain. Working through this loss will help heal a person better then medication can. The cause of the sadness has to be addressed instead of covered up. With our quick fix mentality it is easier to treat the symptoms then the depression. We need to look at depression as something we can overcome. If we just medicate depression it will never truly be resolved.
Gary Greenburg who works in Manufacturing Depression stated that clinical depression may have been manufactured. Once the drug industry started making profits with SSRIs the diagnosis of clinical depression increased. There is a big difference between experience depression and grief.
My thesis has two parts. We refer to depression as struggling with loss, fear, and other situational issues. We also feel depressed when we are isolated. Our views on the world are misguided which also leads to depression. Depressed people may be suffering due to the expectations of daily living we are expected to meet. These expectations are made from society. We are the living results of this misguided world that we have created.
