A retired Canadian couple says Enterprise Rent-A-Car tried to charge them $7,000 after accusing them of putting diesel fuel into a rental SUV—an allegation they strongly deny and say was never proven.

Kelly Graves and Katherine Graves of Kelowna had returned a 2025 Dodge Durango to National Car Rental at Edmonton International Airport after what they described as an uneventful trip in April 2025, according to CBC.

Before dropping off the vehicle, they said they filled the tank at a 7-Eleven about 35 miles from the airport, paying roughly $44 for fuel, and drove back without experiencing any problems.

Kelly Graves and Katherine Graves say they were wrongly accused by Enterprise Rent-A-Car of putting diesel fuel into a gasoline-powered rental vehicle.

About a week after returning the SUV, the couple says they were contacted by the rental company and told the vehicle would not start and that diesel fuel had been found in the engine. They were advised to either file an insurance claim or pay for the damage themselves.

The Graves denied the allegation during that call and again in a follow-up conversation. After that, they say they heard nothing further for several months.

Nine months later, they received a letter from Enterprise demanding payment of approximately CAD $9,500 (about USD $7,000) for the alleged damage.

A retired Canadian couple says they were hit with a $7,000 bill from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, even though their own records appear to contradict the company’s claim.

Kelly Graves said they were frustrated by the delay in communication, explaining: “I was frustrated, because we hadn’t heard anything for such a long time. I thought they closed the case.”

The couple maintains that Enterprise never provided evidence showing that diesel fuel was actually put into the rented vehicle, yet still pursued payment for the alleged damage.

The Graveses also say their documentation and records do not support the company’s version of events, further disputing the charge.
