As a young boy growing up in Shropshire, England, little Joe Whale found himself frequently reprimanded for doodling in class. His innate creative talent was evident even before he had officially begun his schooling, but the demands of daily classes left him with limited opportunities to indulge in his favorite pastime. However, rather than suppressing their son’s artistic flair, Whale’s parents made a decision to redirect his talents towards a more positive path by enrolling him in an after-school art program. It was within this program that his instructors were left astounded by the remarkable talent of this young boy, ultimately leading to his inaugural commission to adorn the interior of a restaurant in 2019.

According to Metro, Joe often found himself in trouble at school due to his incessant doodling. On the contrary, Joe simply yearned for more time to pursue his true passion: art. The limited time available for his artistic endeavors left him feeling frustrated.

In a proactive move to nurture his creative spirit, his parents enrolled the then 9-year-old in an after-school art program in 2019

His teacher was utterly impressed by his drawings and allocated a dedicated wall for him to continue his doodling, a practice he faithfully upholds every week,” revealed Joe’s father, Greg, in an interview.

Joe’s father couldn’t be prouder of his son’s multifaceted talents. While excelling in various activities, it’s evident that Joe’s true passion and potential lie in the realm of art. In a lighthearted tone, his father humorously claims that Joe outshines him in many respects.

“Joe is an exceptionally gifted young lad,” remarked Greg, Joe’s father. “He excels academically, excels in sports like football and cricket, but it’s abundantly clear that his heart belongs to art. Frankly, it’s a bit vexing—he’s even outperforming me in most things,” he quipped, as reported by Metro.

Joe’s art teacher recognized his exceptional talent and began showcasing his creations on social media, marking Joe’s initial step into the realm of professional artistry.

Shortly thereafter, the teacher conveyed exhilarating news to Joe’s parents—a restaurant expressed a strong desire to have their son embellish their walls with his artwork.

Thrilled by the opportunity, Joe’s parents eagerly relayed the exciting proposition to their son, who embraced it without hesitation. Situated in Shrewsbury, England, Number Four, the restaurant, had stumbled upon Joe’s art online and deemed it a perfect fit for their dining area.

Recalling his son’s enthusiastic response to the offer, Greg shared with Metro, “They wanted Joe to craft an art piece for their restaurant’s primary dining space, and we were absolutely elated. When I asked Joe, he wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity. So, after school, we would make our way to the restaurant, where he devoted a couple of hours each evening to manifest his creative vision on their walls.”

Joe’s father dutifully chauffeured him to the restaurant for the project, a task that took his son a mere 12 hours to complete. Greg’s LinkedIn post featuring Joe’s artwork garnered nearly 37,000 likes, and stories highlighting Joe’s extraordinary talent rapidly gained widespread attention. By establishing a website, Instagram, and Facebook accounts under the moniker “Doodle Boy,” Joe rocketed to fame, capturing the interest of renowned brands and even earning recognition from the Prince and Princess of Wales!

Since rising to fame with his artwork featured at Number Four, Joe has garnered a vast following, including prominent figures such as Catherine, the Princess of Wales, and Prince William, the heir to the throne. In December 2020, they enlisted his creative talents to illustrate their three-day tour on the royal train as they visited frontline workers.

In January 2022, at the age of 12, Joe inked a contract with the sporting goods giant, Nike, taking on the role of a “co-creator.” He is set to collaborate with the company on various “special projects.” Joe expressed his exhilaration about this opportunity when speaking to the Mirror.

“This is a dream come true for me. Nike is such a monumental brand, and there are so many exciting endeavors on the horizon that I can’t wait to be a part of. I keep reminding myself to do what I love, to keep doodling. It feels incredible, and I’m genuinely proud of myself,” he shared.

Joe also emphasized that art is an integral part of his identity, saying, “I’ve been drawing my entire life, ever since I was 2 or 3 years old. I started doodling when I was 6 or 7 because I wanted to explore a different style, and it has worked out really well. I don’t overthink my process; I simply follow my instincts and create from the depths of my imagination. There’s not much planning; I just let my feelings guide me.”

Currently, Joe is venturing into the realm of international success by collaborating with the Soden Collection art gallery to exhibit his work. On November 6, 2022, he participated in a live doodling session alongside fellow art enthusiasts, drawing massive crowds. With his captivating black-and-white pieces, reminiscent of the new school Keith Haring, Joe’s future in the art world appears promising and illustrious.
