South African filmmaker Dave Meinert rescued Pegasus, a Great Dane puppy when he was just 4 weeks old. Born into the cruel system of backyard breeding, she and the other puppies were found weak and disabled and a short life expectancy were given due to their bad situation. Sadly, Pegasus’ brothers and sisters did die, but she continued to live on.
“Most of her siblings died at birth or were deformed. She is a “double-merle” and was born with a severe lack of pigment. Most double-merles are born blind and/or deaf and I was told that if she lived, this might happen to her, too,” says Dave.
Before Dave took her home, he was warned that Pegasus would likely die young or grow to be deaf and blind. However, Dave who loved her very much decided to help her to get through this sad experience. For 5 months, Dave filmed his and Pegasus’ early time together in this time-lapse video that Dave called “The Pegasus Project” showing her walking on a treadmill in order for her to exercise to overcome her disabilities.
Today, Pegasus is alive and happy. While she will have some extra obstacles in her life due to her harsh beginnings, this pup appears to be handling them in stride.
Dave still doesn’t know how long Pegasus will live!
But every moment spent together is amazing!
