After contracting listeria from undercooked food, a man named Patanjali Chary achieved a remarkable recovery despite being initially paralyzed. Within a mere three months of treatment at a hospital in Turkey, he transitioned from a state of speechlessness and immobility to regaining his ability to walk. Despite being informed by American doctors and prestigious US medical facilities that his recovery might span up to two years, Mr. Chary defied expectations, being discharged from the Turkish hospital after just three months.

Patanjali Chary, along with his wife Jasmin and the healthcare team at the medical facility, credit his surprising recovery to the advanced technology and holistic approach provided by the hospital. This approach encompassed access to fresh local produce and fostering a “unique” atmosphere of positivity, hope, and confidence regarding his health.

Patanjali Chary captured in a medically induced coma in Benidorm, Spain, as physicians worked to diagnose his condition.

Mr. Chary, residing in Spain at the time and engrossed in his startup endeavors, ventured to Paris for business in November 2022. During his visit, he was served undercooked food at a local restaurant, prompting him to return it to the kitchen. Despite feeling no immediate discomfort, approximately a month later, on New Year’s Eve, he began experiencing sickness, initially attributing it to a common cold. The following day, he awoke to find himself completely paralyzed from the waist down, incapacitated and unable to move. Rushed to a Spanish hospital, where initial diagnoses proved elusive, his deteriorating condition led doctors to induce a coma and administer life support.

Recounting his ordeal to DailyMail.com, Mr. Chary expressed his shock: “I went to stand up from the bed and everything just gave way.” It was later discovered that he had contracted listeria, a potentially lethal bacterium infecting his spine. Listeria infection typically arises from consuming contaminated food, though most cases result in minor illness. However, when the infection spreads to the central nervous system, it can cause severe complications including numbness, seizures, and paralysis.

Treatment ensued with nine different antibiotics, and Mr. Chary emerged from the coma weeks later. Yet, considerable damage had occurred; he struggled to speak, move, and suffered impaired vision. Despite a feeding tube for nutrition and a respiratory tube for oxygen support, his paralysis persisted, particularly in his legs. Initial attempts at passive physical therapy aimed to revive sensation and mobility, but with limited success. Recognizing the need for specialized neurological rehabilitation, the search for adequate treatment led globally.

Following a failed attempt at a Berlin facility, hope emerged with the discovery of Acibadem Hospital in Bodrum, Turkey. Although the prospects of recovery were uncertain, the facility offered assistance. Upon his arrival in March 2023, Mr. Chary showed marginal improvement in speech and eating abilities but remained immobile. Extensive neurological assessments guided the formulation of a comprehensive care regimen, vital for his deteriorated muscles resulting from prolonged immobilization in the hospital bed.

“I required the assistance of four individuals to lift me,” Mr. Chary recounted. Under constant supervision, he commenced twice-daily rehabilitation sessions, encompassing exercises within the hospital bed and efforts to stand and shuffle on his legs. Employing a tilt table, strapped with belts to the bed, aided his attempts to stand by utilizing gravity to stimulate brain activity. Additionally, he utilized supportive bars to pull himself up, aiming to foster independent walking. Electrical stimulation treatments were also administered, targeting specific nerves in his body.

Amidst the rigorous physical and medical regimen, Mr. Chary and his wife credited the Turkish doctors’ holistic approach to care for his swift and remarkable progress. A common Turkish phrase, loosely translating to “Let’s go!” served as a daily mantra, uplifting patients’ spirits. This phrase resonated so deeply with Mr. Chary that he affectionately named two cats in the hospital’s cafeteria after it. Tailored meals, rich in protein and calibrated for recovery, sourced from local markets, supplemented his treatment. Reflecting on the hospital’s compassionate ethos, Mr. Chary remarked, “It was so strange for me to experience that level of care on a daily basis for months… I do believe that played a huge role in why I’m recovering to the level that I am, along with all the other support.”

Contrary to the expectations of friends and family, including those with ties to Harvard Medical School, who foresaw a two-year recovery period, Mr. Chary was discharged from Acibadem hospital after a mere three months in June 2023. The cost of his care in Turkey totaled $200,000. Continuing his therapy at home, Mr. Chary has progressed significantly, estimating himself to be 90 percent back to normal after seven months post-discharge— a milestone typically not reached until 18 months, according to medical advice.

Mr. Chary’s case underscores the prevalence of listeria infection, affecting thousands annually. Originating from raw food, soil, and animal excreta, mild symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting manifest within 24 hours of ingestion, lasting one to three days. However, if the infection progresses beyond the gut, it transforms into a severe invasive illness, with symptoms emerging within two weeks. Treatment involves antibiotics, although according to the CDC, approximately 1,600 Americans contract listeria annually, resulting in around 260 fatalities.
