These teens walked away with more than just a diploma at graduation.

During their high school commencement ceremonies, over 30 New Jersey students were offered $74,000 teaching positions within their former school districts.

Newark Public Schools — the state’s largest district — presented one-year contracts to 34 graduates, most of whom had completed a dual enrollment program designed to prepare them for careers in education.

These conditional contracts require graduates to earn a bachelor’s degree and obtain New Jersey state teacher certification.

Once they complete their challenging post-high school studies, the Newark students will return to the district as full-time teachers, earning an impressive $74,000 annual salary — nearly double the average starting salary in the state.

According to ZipRecruiter estimates, the average entry-level salary in Newark is around $34,200.

Thirty-two aspiring teachers from East Side High School and University High School completed the Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy, a program offered through Montclair State University and the American Federation of Teachers, the district announced.

“These contracts represent our commitment to nurturing homegrown talent and building a sustainable pipeline of educators who truly reflect and understand our students,” said Newark Public Schools Superintendent Roger León. “Today, we’re not just celebrating graduates — we’re welcoming future colleagues.”

Two more graduates received special offers as they crossed the stage to collect their diplomas.

During the June 24 graduation at Arts High School, Miguel Rodriguez Bermudez was called back to the podium by Superintendent León just as he was leaving the stage, according to footage shared by the district.

Addressing the crowd at Newark Symphony Hall, León shared that the 19-year-old planned to attend William Paterson University with aspirations to become a music teacher in the district.

“Guess what, ladies and gentlemen? Here’s a $74,000 contract for Miguel Rodriguez Bermudez,” León announced, holding up the framed contract as the teen joyfully jumped with excitement.

Superintendent León praised the teen’s mother, recognizing her sacrifices and determination in raising her son and helping him secure the teaching position.

“This is why this moment happens — because of your single mom and all the sacrifices she made,” León said.

“To all the single moms out there, keep working hard — greatness is coming your way,” he added.

“This is what happens when we invest in our young people, nurture homegrown talent, and build a future that begins right here at home,” said Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “These graduates are role models and leaders who will give back to the very schools and communities that shaped them.”
