Outspoken critics of Donald Trump, Green Day have been selected to perform at the Super Bowl opening ceremony, joining halftime headliner Bad Bunny in a move likely to further alienate MAGA supporters.
Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has previously labeled the Trump administration as fascist and has altered lyrics during live performances of the band’s hit “American Idiot,” changing the line “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda.”

Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day performed on ABC’s Good Morning America in New York City in July 2024.
Last summer, Armstrong led a crowd at the Download Festival in a chant calling former President Donald Trump a “fat bastard.”
“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” said Armstrong, a Bay Area native, in a statement.
“We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and to open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

Bad Bunny performs in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in July 2025.
The NFL’s selection of Puerto Rican-born Bad Bunny has already sparked controversy, driven by the artist’s criticism of Donald Trump and his recent pledge to avoid touring in the United States over concerns for his fans’ safety related to ICE enforcement.
Trump condemned the decision in October.
“I never heard of him. I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it — it’s crazy,” he said of the Grammy-winning artist.
“I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” the president added.
