Amy Anderson was devastated when she lost her unborn son Bryson at 20 weeks. So when she made an inspiring decision to help other premature babies, it was against the advice of her doctors.
In 2010, Bryson suffered bladder complications and died while still in the womb. Mom-of-two Amy was told to “bind her breasts and take Sudafed” to reduce the amount of breast milk her body would produce.
But she didn’t. “I was in horrid pain, so I decided to pump to relieve my body. I felt a powerful closeness to Bryson,” Amy told the Philly Voice.
Wondering what to do with the breast milk, Amy’s research led her to discover the huge demand for human milk to save premature babies’ lives.
As Bryson was so early, Amy’s breast milk was incredibly nutrient rich (known as “preterm breast milk”) as it was intended to support a significantly premature baby.
“I decided to donate Bryson’s milk and turn my tragedy into a blessing,” Amy said.
Amy pumped milk for 8 months and donated around 92 gallons of human milk, reaching hundreds of premature babies.
Learning that breast milk can reduce the chance of some fatal diseases in premature babies by as much as 79%, Amy was determined to save as many infants as possible.
Amy is now determined to educate more people about donating breast milk.
“This unique form of organ donation can be completely life-changing for the many precious recipients.”
Amy added, “As Bryson’s mother, it is such an honor to have this opportunity to bring support to mothers following the devastation of baby loss. A mother’s love is a mother’s love regardless of whether or not her child lives or dies.”
