The 3-year-old Moroccan kid, Yahya El Jabaly, was born with no eyes or nose and missing parts of his skull. This rare condition prevents the bones from fusing properly in the womb. Yahya was unable to speak properly and the upper part of his skull at the place of his forehead had not been formed, leaving part of his brain only covered by skin.
His story was posted by the family’s friend to get help for Yahya. Moroccan-born Fatima Baraka from Melbourne got in touch with the family after seeing the plea online. Baraka, who was born near the village where the El Jabaly family lives, was moved by the boy’s story. So she arranged for Australian surgeons to help build Yahya a new face.

Yahya and his family live in a small village near Tangier, North of Morocco. Due to his appearance, Yahya was not confident to get social with other kids. So he often hide himself to not attract attention.
Fatima a breast cancer survivor and founder of the Moroccan Children’s Appeal, gathered money to bring Yahya to Melbourne for his treatment.
Before undergoing the life-changing surgery to reconstruct Yahya’s face, a range of tests were done on Yahya in Melbourne, including CT and MRI scans, to see if he was suitable for surgery

The operation took 18 hours and 45 minutes, and was extremely dangerous to undertake. Dr Holmes felt it offered the only chance for Yahya to live a normal life.
Doctors were pleased with the outcome of the surgery.
And his family, including his new sister, are overjoyed at Yahya’s progress.
