Cara Brookins from Arkansas, US, is a mom of four kids who struggled a lot due to her past relationships. Two marriages with violence and being stalked by an mentally ill man are not joyful experiences for a woman, especially a mother, to live. “my kids and I needed something,” Cara said. “I felt ashamed and I was worried that they had no self-esteem and no confidence.” That is why Cara decided that this has to stop for the sake of both, her and her kids. She did something so amazing and inspiring that left many people in awe. Although, her financial situation didn’t allow her to afford a new house, but she didn’t let this to stop her from starting a new beginning. She decided to build her house all by herself with no knowledge and no experience..Isn’t that amazing?
Her new story began in 2007 when she was driving during a family trip, Cara suddenly spotted a house destroyed by a tornado with only its foundation left behind. At that moment, she was inspired by the sight and an idea popped into her mind. “It made me think, ‘what if we bought some 2’x4’s and sheetrock and put that together? What would our dream house be? Would we want to build it?,’” Cara said. Her kids (then 2, 11, 15 and 17) were absolutely up for it, as after all the domestic violence, this was a way for them to improve their lives.
The little family was motivated, Cara took a loan of $ 150,000 for materials and supplies also with a little help from a lot of Youtube videos, they started to build their dream house. They work long hours together. They learned how to frame a house, pour a foundation, and that’s it! the job is done, they succeeded to build a 3500 square foot house with five bedrooms, a three-car garage, a huge shop, and a two-story treehouse – and the family was stronger as ever!
The entire experience left her kids fearless and full of faith in themselves. “They dive into anything. There’s nothing you could suggest to them that they could not do. it’s an incredible thing.”
