Moira, who was the first African-Caribbean woman to read the news on British television, was among a number of people recognised with royal honours

Moira, the pioneering African-Caribbean woman who made history as the first to read the news on British television, was one of several individuals honored with royal accolades.

After 26 years with the BBC, Moira resigned in 2007 following the Corporation’s abrupt announcement of her departure. This move sparked allegations of ageism, with claims that the BBC was sidelining older women from on-screen roles. Consequently, MPs lodged complaints demanding her immediate reinstatement.

However, Moira made a comeback to the BBC in 2010, taking on the role of the main newsreader for Radio 2’s breakfast show.

Originally from Hampstead, London, Moira has held various television presenting positions, including stints on The Andrew Marr Show, BBC Breakfast, and News After Noon.

In 2019, she joined Classic FM as the morning newsreader and began hosting “Moira Stuart Meets…,” a series featuring interviews with notable figures from arts, politics, sports, and entertainment.

Her television work includes presenting documentaries such as “In Search Of Wilberforce” for BBC Television and a documentary titled “The Unknown Soldier” for BBC World Service.

Moira has been recognized with honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh in 2006 and Canterbury Christ Church University in January 2013.

Throughout her career, Moira has earned numerous accolades, including the title of best newscaster of the year at the 1988 TV and Radio Industries Club Awards and the Women of Achievement television personality prize in the following year.

In March 2020, she was honored with the Harvey Lee Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting at the Broadcasting Press Guild (BPG) ceremony.

In a 2017 interview, Moira disclosed that she had ceased drinking altogether due to issues she had developed with alcohol (stock image from 2010).

During a 2017 interview with Chris, Moira disclosed that she had stopped drinking altogether due to developing issues with alcohol. Speaking on Chris’ breakfast show on Radio 2 in February 2017, she mentioned her past enjoyment of alcohol, particularly at weddings, but explained that health problems had compelled her to quit.

During the conversation, Chris asked Moira about her experiences with Dry January, a month-long alcohol abstinence challenge. Moira admitted to having previously indulged in drinking, particularly at weddings, jokingly referring to herself as “notorious” for it. However, she revealed that her struggles with alcohol-related health issues led her to abstain entirely.

Chris humorously remarked on Moira’s past habit of “minesweeping” at events, to which Moira candidly replied that her decision to quit drinking was due to developing problems with alcohol, citing migraines and other health issues. She emphasized that alcohol, cheese, and chocolate were all substances that didn’t agree with her, leading her to give up drinking altogether.
