Catherine met her boyfriend and killer Rafal Nowak in 2010 when he was 31 years old. She fell in love with him in 2012. He was treated by Jayne, Catherine’s mother like a son. As one grieving family, Catherine’s parents and sister shared the sad moment with Rafal believing he was as sorrow as they were. In a cold blood, their daughter’s murderer slept in their bed, ate their food and was innocently held by all the family members.
Jayne recalls: “I made Rafal toast for breakfast, I gave him a hug and told him we loved him because he was part of our family. We were upset, scared and bewildered – we didn’t have a clue what was going on.
“Now I feel absolutely betrayed – I hate him. The thought he stayed in our house after he killed Catherine makes me feel physically sick. “Leanne and I now have post-traumatic stress disorder because we can’t get past those days. We are all being treated for depression. “I feel as though I betrayed Catherine by letting him sleep in our house and eat with us. I looked after him – after what he had done to her.”
Driven by cupidity for Catherine’s life insurance, Pole Nowak smothered his girlfriend using a pillow and then proceeded along with his secret lover, Anna Lagwinowicz and her uncle Tadevsz Dmytryszyn to get rid of her body. “We were in total shock. All I could think was we had lost my beautiful girl.
“The last time I saw her was two days earlier. When we said ‘goodbye’ that night I gave Catherine a hug and we told one another we loved each other – I never suspected it would be the last time I would ever see her.”
Jayne adds: “Rafal was the love of Catherine’s life and he totally betrayed her. He is scum. Catherine’s death has absolutely broken us.
“There are some days when I don’t even want to live, without her. She was witty and smart; she had everything to live for.
“We have such emptiness and pain now – we will never get our lives back.”
