A small Greenland settlement is holding its collective breath as a titanic iceberg drifts dangerously close to shore — and perilously near residents’ homes.
For days, the massive frozen giant has been on a collision course with tiny Innaarsuit, prompting local authorities to issue urgent warnings to the community.
If the fearsome frosty giant were to strike the shore or break apart, officials warned that significant damage and injuries could result.
While it’s unlikely that chunks of ice would fall directly onto land, the crashing impact of falling ice could generate massive waves capable of sweeping ashore.
“Because of this, the [local municipality] issued an official warning about the iceberg, and we are temporarily closing the local fish factory where I work, as well as the small shop,” Lehtonen said.
Despite the towering presence of the icy giant, not all residents of the town are unsettled by its arrival.
“I’ve asked the locals how they feel about the iceberg. Some say they’re worried, but plenty are actually kind of excited—myself included,” he added.
This isn’t the first time a massive iceberg has drifted into Innaarsuit’s harbor.
In 2018, a similarly huge iceberg—weighing an estimated 11 tons—floated into the same harbor, so enormous it was visible from space.
At the time, residents living near vulnerable areas were evacuated to higher ground as a precaution.
After several days of relentless strong winds, the 2018 iceberg eventually drifted away.
