Moments after the title ceremony, Indiana quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza didn’t hesitate to find his family following Monday’s national championship victory.

With a championship hat in hand, the projected No. 1 overall pick made his way to his parents — his wheelchair-bound mother, Elsa, and his father, Fernando Sr. — sharing an emotional embrace that was captured by WESH.

It’s a moment the Mendoza family will treasure forever, made even more meaningful by the deep bond between mother and son. Mendoza has previously referred to his mother as his “best friend,” a connection that was unmistakable in the celebration.

“This is a dream come true,” Elsa Mendoza — who is battling multiple sclerosis (MS) — told reporters following the game.

Fernando’s story has taken on a Hollywood-worthy ending, as the Indiana quarterback capped off one of the most remarkable seasons in college football history. With a 27–21 win over Miami on Monday, the Hoosiers finished a perfect 16–0 campaign and secured the national title.

Throughout the season, the projected future Raiders quarterback made it clear that his success would not be possible without his mother’s unwavering support. Mendoza has frequently referred to Elsa as his “best friend,” including in a December video shared by X account @HoosiersConnect, and has drawn daily inspiration from her ongoing battle with MS.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that damages the protective covering of nerves and can impact a person’s ability to walk, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Mendoza has also turned that inspiration into action, partnering with an Indiana-based business to launch the “Mendoza Burrito,” with all proceeds benefiting the National MS Society.

Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza spoke emotionally about the influence his mother has had on his journey after winning the national title.

“Her happiness, her joy, and her determination inspire me every single day — that’s what drives me,” Mendoza said. “When I’m in a workout and start feeling tired, when that little voice says maybe I should skip a rep, I think about my mom. She shows up every day, puts in the work, and does it all with an incredible attitude and positivity.”

In his first season at Indiana, Mendoza authored one of the greatest turnaround stories in college football history. He led a program long considered a bottom-feeder to the top of the Big Ten, upsetting reigning national champion Ohio State in the conference title game and defeating powerhouse programs Alabama, Oregon, and Miami during the College Football Playoff.

Mendoza’s historic campaign culminated with him being awarded the Heisman Trophy.

Elsa Mendoza and Fernando Sr. stood proudly by their son’s side throughout the celebration.

Before the award ceremony, Elsa wrote a heartfelt essay to Fernando, reflecting on his journey and thanking him for the strength and compassion he showed her during some of her most difficult moments.

“But you’ve made it so much easier — in the sweetest, strongest, most Fernando way possible — by making me feel the exact opposite of embarrassed,” Elsa wrote on Dec. 11, 2025. “You’ve made me feel seen.

“Whether it was giving me full debriefs of your college visits — what you liked, what you didn’t, pictures included — or calling me before a big game I had to miss because I was in treatment … or being so vocal and passionate about MS fundraising … or even something as silly as joking, ‘Wait, did you put on a few pounds?’ when you had to carry me up the stairs — you’ve always had that same spark in your eye.

“No matter what kind of day I was having or what state I was in, you never once looked away. You never treated me like I was embarrassing or deficient — only as someone you love and stand by. And even as my condition has worsened and our lives have changed, you’ve made me feel like I’m still every part of myself. Like I’m still the same person you’ve been teammates with since we survived our first Boston winter together. Like I’m still that same mom.”

When Fernando Mendoza was named the Heisman Trophy winner, emotions poured out as he honored his mother — who watched through tears of her own.

“Mommy, this is your trophy just as much as it is mine,” Mendoza said. “You’ve always been my biggest fan. You’re my light. You’re my why. You’re my greatest supporter. Your sacrifices, your courage, your love — those were my first playbook, and they’re the playbook I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Throughout the championship game, ESPN repeatedly showed Elsa Mendoza and Fernando Sr. celebrating from the stands, particularly after Fernando’s Herculean fourth-down touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave Indiana a 24–14 lead.

Indiana’s defense later intercepted Carson Beck to seal the victory, delivering the Mendoza family one final, unforgettable celebration to cap a perfect season.
